In his talk Malcolm explores Paul’s arrival in Athens and the first preaching of the gospel message into the heart of Greek culture. Malcolm reflects on the 1st century culture in Athens, how the people engaged with Paul’s message, and how Paul adapts his approach accordingly.  He also considers some of the parallels with our own 21st century western culture and what that means for us as we follow Jesus in this time and place.

The early church is birthed with with life, death and resurrection of Jesus. But it was so fragile it could have fizzled out before it had started. However, the Holy Spirit breathes on early disciples and they multiply; a movement is born, that changes the world. Jesus taught us in the Lord’s Prayer (Matt 6:9-13) … May your Kingdom come soon. May your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. An apostolic community is one that seeks to bring heaven to earth by being representatives of Jesus, lights that reflect Jesus (Matt 5:14-16). This is more than simply evangelising or church planting, it’s about living, blessing and expressing the life of Jesus through the out breathing of the Spirit of God in and through us so others may know Him.

Continuing an intermittent series on ‘Tracing our Roots’, this message looks at our community as a ‘People of the Spirit’. One of the convictions which draws us together as a church is that encounter with the Holy Spirit of God is a key part of our walk with Jesus, forming us more into His image, and drawing us closer to the Father. We look at some historic context for our journey, and realise that without the Holy Spirit, the church will be unable to fulfil God’s heart for her. There is an invitation here to ‘swim in the River of God’ who is the Spirit, and soak in His presence on an ongoing basis in our lives.

The world we live in is anxious, fractious and increasingly divided. In our culture ‘difference’ is often seen as negative. Despite all the training in our workplaces, communities and schools ‘diverse-like-me’ has become the most acceptable form of diversity. But what can the scriptures tell us about how to approach difference, and how can we hold together Difference and Togetherness in a way that reflects the Kingdom of God?

In the second of this series on words that at first glance seem incompatible, we are looking at “Gathered, scattered Church” from Acts 8: 4-8. Church is not a building, nor a service on Sunday morning, but people that sometimes gather together to worship, pray, break bread, read the Scriptures, and sometimes are scattered to the places where they live, work or play. How can we intentionally be the church in our scattered-ness as well as in our gathering? Why has God placed us where we live or work? And what is His purpose in doing so?

Sometimes it can seem two words or ideas are contradictory, we might for example think that the charismatic and contemplative tradition are very different and don’t seem to sit well together. For our first gathering for 2023 the prophetic community offered a word of encouragement, in the form of a poem, both to the us as individuals and together as a church. You can find the poem as a PDF below.

1. Consider if there is a disappointment, pain or grief that is unresolved that you need Father God to bring healing to (Ezekiel 47:12). I imagine myself standing in a dry river bed and presenting the pain to God and asking His Holy Spirit to come and flow over and in me with healing.

2. In what areas do I want to see life come this year? In my work, family, relationships or projects in the community. In every place where the river flows, there will be life (Ezekiel 47:9).

3. Ask God, what one thing can I do this year to deepen my relationship with Him?
