In this episode of Community Conversations with Dr. Jill Bowen, I spend some time with Katrina Pratt-Roebuck.

Katrina Pratt-Roebuck is Senior Director of Systems Integration for the City of Philadelphia Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual disAbility Services (DBHIDS). Katrina oversees the Systems Integration unit’s work across the seven divisions of DBHIDS as well as with systemwide stakeholders, including government agencies, community-based organizations, and other key partners, to align, coordinate, and integrate work, to improve processes, operations, and programming for the people we serve with the overall goal of improving population health.

Katrina and Dr. Bowen have a lively discussion about implementing DBHIDS missions and thinking about ‘health’ as a whole person idea. Katrina also talks about a new grant DBHIDS received and what they’ve learned from some focus groups she’s already facilitated. One theme: be kind and care, it makes life so much more pleasant.

Hector is the CEO of Hispanic Community Counseling Services (HCCS). The HCCS is a “Latino-operated, community-based, outpatient agency offering behavioral and mental health intervention services that enable individuals and families to meet the challenges within today’s scope of “problems of living.”

Hector aims to have HCCS be a beacon of hope in the neighborhoods they serve. He wants to meet the community where they are and spread the work of Hispanic Community Counseling Services to Philadelphia and further afield.

Cherie is the Executive Director of The Alliance of Community Service Providers. She represents the Alliance before (and coordinates Alliance activities with) various governmental and legislative officials, as well as many other organizations concerned with services provided for individuals and families needing services and supports for the challenges of mental illness, intellectual disabilities, and addictions. 

The Alliance works to improve the quality and sustainability of services, provide a voice for our agencies and the people they serve at the city and state levels, and create a venue for collaboration, problem solving, and information sharing.

Pipeline work takes time as Cherie tells Dr. Bowen, but it’s worth it.

In this episode of Community Conversations with Dr. Jill Bowen, I spend some time with Malcolm Musgrove.

Malcolm has more than two decades of experience in the behavioral health care delivery system. Currently, he serves as the Vice President of Adult Behavioral Health, Southeastern PA for Merakey. Merakey is a non-profit provider of developmental, behavioral health, and education services.

Malcolm’s is working in Philadelphia to establish healthy villages in communities in the city. By taking a whole person approach and provided a customer-focused warm handoff to the services people need, there’s an opportunity for real impact.

And as Malcolm says: “it takes courage to walk through our doors and we can help you walk through other doors.” It’s really TEC in action!

Bill Krebs is a leading voice in Philadelphia for people with intellectual disabilities. Bill is an advocate who supports other self advocates with disabilities throughout Philadelphia. He’s been associated with the City of Philadelphia Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual Disability Services (DBHIDS), for more than 20 years, 

Bill says that once he started talking and backing himself there was no stopping him - now he advocates for others and maybe, more importantly, helps people become self advocates. Plus, his positivity is infectious!

Asher Kemp is the Executive Director of the Coalition of Culturally Competent Providers (CCCP). The mission of the CCCP is to “provide leadership and guidance in ensuring the application of culturally competent best practices in behavioral health policy, practices, programming and research for Philadelphia’s African American community.”

Asher shares with me how the CCCP put the TEC philosophy into practice during the pandemic. But more than that, Asher explains their approach to engaging the communities they serve in meaningful conversations - whether it’s about housing, mental health or the way the NFL treats its players.

In this episode of Community Conversations with Dr. Jill Bowen, I spend some time with Antonio Valdés.

Antonio (Tony)  Valdés is the CEO of Children’s Crisis Treatment Center (CCTC), a non-profit agency specializing in providing behavioral health services to Philadelphia’s children and their families. Since joining CCTC in 1997, Tony and his team have increased the number of children and families they serve from 250 annually; to over 2400 children and families across the greater Philadelphia community..

Tony shares how CCTC implemented the Sanctuary Model with great impact. The Sanctuary Model is a “research-informed, trauma-responsive training model serving human impact agencies, social impact organizations, educators and communities.” Plus, Tony says when it comes to working with kids and families, focusing on the future is an important piece that cannot be forgotten.

In this episode of "Community Conversations with Dr. Jill Bowen", I spend some time with Dr. Reginald Banks. 

Dr. Banks is the Chair of the Coalition of Culturally Competent Providers and the Chief Psychologist at Dunbar Community Counseling Services. He has been helping to serve the people of Philadelphia for more than 30 years. 

Dr. Banks tells me about leaving the more traditional clinical model of trauma outreach in favor of heading into the community to meet people where they are. It’s not without its challenges, but Dr. Banks remains focused on the goals for the upcoming year.
