3 John is written to help the church understand the importance of community and hospitality, and how this advances the mission of God. The letter revolves around Gaius (the recipient of the letter), Diotrephes (the one causing trouble), and Demetrius (the delivery of the letter). John writes to help Gaius stand in his faith and not imitate or fall prey to Diotrephes.

The greatest picture of the love and forgiveness of God towards us is the cross of Jesus. It is there that God’s love is shown to the greatest extent. We love and forgive ourselves and others to the degree that we believe we are loved and forgiven by God.
