Were you discouraged this week that you don’t cut it? Did you look down on someone who is bad? Jesus said to “be perfect”! (v.48). (“Oh boy! I’m done!”). How is that possible? Was He serious? Jesus was more than serious! He even warned against tampering with God’s laws and used six illustrations to show us the gravity of imperfection. Where does that leave us?

What satisfies? With the arrival of God’s Kingdom, Jesus declares that ‘Makarios’, or blessedness (fully satisfied in God) comes to us in an unexpected way. It starts with being “poor in spirit” (morally bankrupt beyond measure), but as a result it changes what I hunger for and then leads me to be filled with things that truly satisfy. Our own spiritual bankruptcy opens the door to satisfaction.

The death of Kobe Bryant was shocking to us. How sudden. The moment he stepped into the helicopter last Sunday morning, he was probably not thinking that he would be face to face with his Creator within minutes. Our study this week has a certain shock value. The Kingdom has come! We are taking a journey through Matthew’s gospel to see and feel and respond to the arrival of the Kingdom of Heaven. What was it like? How did it change people? What was the message? How can we be prepared?

The Body of Christ is an equipping mechanism to help us grow into fullness. Our passage today includes the concept of “speaking the truth in love.” What does that mean? Is it better for people to just be quiet and mind their own business, or how should the church help each other to grow? Jesus seemed to model that for us by being compassionate and yet assertive when necessary. Let’s look a little closer. There is great potential for growth.
