I often get sucked into the nuances of culture, “Have it your way...”, “Follow your heart…”, “You deserve…”, but I don’t find that it all really adds up to joy. In our story this week, the remnant nation makes some intentional decisions to dedicate the completed wall to God. They give up certain individual “rights” and the results are staggering!

After “repairing the breach”, Nehemiah and Ezra rebuild the community and it becomes a protection for this remnant nation. Let’s see the specifics on how we can benefit when we lean into community.

As the “walls are being rebuilt” we run into a major roadblock! People begin to enslave each other after they had been bought and freed from slavery in exile! Nehemiah gets super angry! Let’s explore together what he does about it, and how the entire community vows to be a place of debt forgiveness and generosity.

Nehemiah is rebuilding life in a warzone. God had promised Abraham long before: your people will be huge, your name will be crazy famous and there will be blessings for everyone. The people respond, “we couldn’t care less--especially about you.” So God exiles his people, pulling them from the Promised Land. Several decades later they are allowed to return but things are not the same. Now Nehemiah squints to see the promises of God in the rubble of Jerusalem. It’s not just about a messed up wall, but a messed up people and how to accomplish an impossible task in the face of opposition.

If you are like me, I don’t like to be totally honest with myself, or others. I can tend to skew the facts a little to make things seem better than they are. In the roadmap to rebuilding broken down walls, Nehemiah, after stopping and praying for four months, finally decides at great risk to be honest with himself and the King. The results are amazing!!
