As we prepare for the advent of Christ, we are going to take a look at the backstory. It is filled with hope because it is rooted in history and in promise, and because it includes a pretty lousy line-up of people who were all part of the bloodline of Christ. What does that tell you?

I often get sucked into the nuances of culture, “Have it your way...”, “Follow your heart…”, “You deserve…”, but I don’t find that it all really adds up to joy. In our story this week, the remnant nation makes some intentional decisions to dedicate the completed wall to God. They give up certain individual “rights” and the results are staggering!

It doesn’t take much to get off track. Since God is faithful and we are not so much, God gave us the group for our good. It keeps us moving in the right direction. After “repairing the breach”, Nehemiah and Ezra rebuild the community and it becomes a protection for this remnant nation. Let’s see the specifics on how we can benefit when we lean into community.

There is great joy in being a community of believers when Jesus is at the center and the words of God are respected! In our story, now that the breached walls are repaired, Nehemiah takes some intentional steps to restoring the community. Let’s look at how corporate worship and community practices lead to reflecting the GREATNESS of GOD, and to joy being restored!

Satan is already defeated, but he would love to wreck you. There is an invisible war and the story of Nehemiah reveals the tactics of the enemy. The walls are completed, but the gates are not yet hung! This weekend we will talk about how we can “close the gates” on our enemy.

As the “walls are being rebuilt” we run into a major roadblock! People begin to enslave each other after they had been bought and freed from slavery in exile! Nehemiah gets super angry! Let’s explore together what he does about it, and how the entire community vows to be a place of debt forgiveness and generosity.

Nehemiah is rebuilding life in a warzone. God had promised Abraham long before: your people will be huge, your name will be crazy famous and there will be blessings for everyone. The people respond, “we couldn’t care less--especially about you.” So God exiles his people, pulling them from the Promised Land. Several decades later they are allowed to return but things are not the same. Now Nehemiah squints to see the promises of God in the rubble of Jerusalem. It’s not just about a messed up wall, but a messed up people and how to accomplish an impossible task in the face of opposition.

If you are like me, I don’t like to be totally honest with myself, or others. I can tend to skew the facts a little to make things seem better than they are. In the roadmap to rebuilding broken down walls, Nehemiah, after stopping and praying for four months, finally decides at great risk to be honest with himself and the King. The results are amazing!!

The broken down walls of Jerusalem reflect our brokenness. The physical stories in the OT have spiritual lessons for us. This story is more than just about how to build a physical wall. It’s a great roadmap towards renewal! We have all experienced a “breach” in our “wall” and the need to recover and find healing. My hope and prayer is for our study to take us through this process together.
