Why Advent?
During the Advent season we anticipate together the arrival of the Christ-child. It’s good to anticipate. Without the wait, there would be no wonder. Into the darkness a great light has appeared!
In our study we will see some of the hopeless perspectives from ‘under the sun’ and then consider together that Hope is a Person!
Isa. 9:6- “For unto us a child is born…and the government will rest on His shoulders, and he will be called wonderful Counselor, mighty God, everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

This is one of the most fascinating passages in Ecclesiastes. Solomon says, “Do not be over-righteous…why destroy yourself?” (v.16a), and “Do not be over-wicked…why die before your time?” (v.17a). What does he mean here? The law says, “Be holy, as I am holy.” (Leviticus 11:45 & 1 Peter 1:16). Let’s take a closer look this weekend.

Do you have a dream? If it’s not somehow connected to God, then it can end up becoming a nightmare. The ability to enjoy anything comes from God. (Eccl. 2:25). That is why it’s so important to focus on what God’s will is for us, and not our own will. Here is a good place to start: “Give thanks in all things, for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus.” 1 Thess. 5:18.

Freud and Frankl were two brilliant psychologists who lived in Vienna just before World War II. Freud specialized in man’s search for happiness and Frankl specialized in man’s search for meaning. Frankl discovered while living in several concentration camps that without meaning there is no will to live. After reading our passage for this week, life “under the sun” is exposed from various angles as entirely meaningless. What makes the difference for us?

Wouldn’t you love to live in a world with no evil? Whether it is hurricanes, raging fires, mass shootings, sexual assaults, greedy corporations, or sickness, we are constantly aware of the destruction and evil around us and within us. But this weekend as CFC gathers we are going to celebrate the good news of the kingdom of God, that a day is coming when this evil will no longer be the reality of our existence!

As we close out our current series on Jesus’ parables of the kingdom of God we will dive deep into God’s ongoing redeeming work in us and his plan to bring an end to all that is evil. I pray that the Spirit of God will prepare us all for the work that he wants to do this weekend as we seek his kingdom to come on earth as it is in heaven.

Matthew 13:44-46

Nearly every Sunday of my youth my brothers and I would load up in the car and head over to St Michael’s Catholic Church in Mt Airy, MD for the 10:30am Mass. And every week we would recite the Lord’s prayer, “Our Father who art in Heaven, Hallowed be thy name; Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done…” For many years I had no idea what “kingdom” meant – I had crazy images in my head—and therefore many of Jesus’ parables seemed mystical to me. The kingdom of God points to the return of Jesus the King, an amazing future reality where he gathers, judges, and rules the world. But it’s also a present day reality –a right-now transformation, a new life, and an opportunity to become members in His kingdom. Jesus compares that kingdom to both and treasure and a perfect pearl. This week we’ll look at the reckless men of this parable and how their discoveries.
