What expectations did you bring to the Christian experience? Have you ever had your expectations of something blown out of the water?
In the account of Christ, the expectation was for Him to establish a high-end country that would be the envy of the world. Instead Jesus makes this radical declaration that he must suffer and die (and rise).
Together we will explore this concept of learning to think bigger. A Jesus follower is willing to make an exchange in this temporary world for something far more glorious and eternal. We die to live. Well, what does that mean for us?

Perception: The birthday party I organized was a failure.
Reality: Two moms who met at the party became life-long friends (unbeknownst to you).
Perception: I don’t feel respected at work.
Reality: Someone at work noticed my Christian faith and chose to accept Christ years later.
Notice how our perceptions are limited and how it forces us to have to fully rely on God. In fact, for Jesus to make us useful, we must learn to fully rely on God by managing our perceptions. In our passage this week, we will see multiple times that people come to Jesus with what they think they need, when actually there is a different reality in front of their eyes.

This weekend we will see the compassion of Christ in contrast to religious pride. It’s so good to knowthat Jesus does not give us what we deserve. A deep understanding of the love of God can be a
safeguard to the attitude in our hearts.

Our founding fathers rightly chose, “In God We Trust” for our currency. Perhaps they were aware of the danger of trusting too heavily on our material resources. This weekend we are going see three stories that reveal our obsession with the physical world and see that when God does not give us what we think we need, then He has something even better.

March 31 & April 1, 2018

If Jesus is God, then it changes everything. In the eyewitness accounts of His life we have seen that Jesus has the ability to heal, to forgive sins, the authority over nature, demonic powers and even over death (Jairus’ daughter). In the eyewitness accounts of His death and resurrection, we see great love and power at work. How could He love me enough to die for me, and how could He rise from being dead? If Jesus is God, then what does that mean for us today? Great question.

Mark tells us in 3:14 that “He (Jesus) appointed twelve-designating them apostles- that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach and to have authority to drive out demons.
This weekend in Mark 6:6-13 we see the twelve being “sent” for the first time. In like manner, we the Church, the people of God, are sent into the world around us as ministers of reconciliation. What an honor to co-labor with Jesus on behalf of a lost world, trusting him to work through us to bring many to him for salvation. And even as John the  Baptist loses his life after faithful years of service we have the hope of resurrection always before us.

Three great short stories this weekend!! We’re learning more about Jesus (He even has the authority over death)! We really do have the best of both worlds because of our faith in Jesus. In our passage today we find that Jesus is extremely caring in how He handles our pain, but also limitless in power, even to the point of raising a girl from the dead! A God who is limitless in power is terrifying. A God who is limitless in love, but without any real power is endearing, but not very hopeful. If Jesus has unending love and power, then we should trust Him. Let’s take a closer look.

After seeing that Jesus has authority over sickness and nature, we are now confronted with reality of His power over the spirit-world. We are all aware of the damage the evil one is able to inflict on humanity. This weekend we will learn about the tactics and purposes of the enemy, the limitations of evil and the absolute authority of Jesus over evil. How does God use evil for His ultimate purposes? That’s a great question.

This weekend we have three short stories and a life lesson. In our text, Jesus illustrates for us the impact of simple faith. It will give us far more than we bargained for. It will guide us through the toughest storms. When we choose to believe in Jesus, it takes us beyond our world. This mystery has less to do with the size of our faith than with the object of our faith.

Wenn Gottes Wort die Wahrheit ist, dann werde ich es wirklich ernst nehmen!

Did you catch that?
Coming from me, that top phrase might make you curious, but not enough to figure out what it means. But, if you knew that phrase was from God and that it contained the secret to life, then would you do whatever it takes to find out its meaning?

That is kind of what Jesus did by speaking in veiled side-stories, called parables. The first one is the key to understanding the rest. It has to do with the condition of our hearts. Are we really open to listening to God? Do His words alter our lives?
