Romans 6:15-23

The sticky factor! I become what I open myself up to. These things start to cling to me and I become them. They start to control what I think, say and do. Romans 6 expresses gratefulness (v.17-18) by noting that I become more like God when I open myself up to Him. In fact, we can’t serve two masters. We have some intentional choices to make. Some of us learn sooner than later.

Romans 6:1-14

Wow! Really? By substitution I am saved in Christ alone (Romans 3-5) – unaffected by my works. So then I’ll just keep on sinning. (I hope that’s ok).
“By no means!” (Rom. 6:2a). What does Paul mean here? If I am truly saved, will I stop sinning? If I continue to sin, does it mean I am not really saved? Is there anything I can do to stop sinning? These are great questions that are answered for us in our text.

Romans 5:12-21
I don’t have the stomach to be doctor, but still, I love the idea of looking beneath the surface of the human body to see how it works in all its complexity. Most of us have this innate curiosity to figure out how great things came into being. In Romans 5:12-21, Paul reveals the anatomy of the gospel and what makes the gift of grace so remarkable. Paul defines a new humanity that is identified in Jesus Christ. Jesus became what we are so that we might become what he is. This weekend we will be exploring how the gift of God’s grace is this bright shining beacon that overwhelms the darkness and alienation of sin.

Romans 5:1-11
What is the greatest thing you have? Is it a snow blower, a great house, the latest smart phone or your family? Paul claims that being justified before God is your greatest asset. In fact, it gives us every reason to rejoice. Whether being at peace with God or finding purpose in your trials, God has given us far more than we deserve.

It’s scandalous! There is something in us that makes us want to contribute to being saved. If our faith in Christ is all it takes to be totally righteous, then is it inferior to a system of works? This weekend we will take a closer look at saving faith and what it really does. This faith is not a lesser means for salvation, but far superior because it keeps God at the center.

Romans 3:9-26
Standing in a Cafeteria line a few years ago, a woman in front of me slumped down and I just sort of caught her. My first reaction was to try and prop her back up. Finally, my wife suggested that I lay her down on the floor. That’s the best thing I could have done for her.

After a look at the human dilemma, the final verdict comes in, and no one is able to “prop themselves up” before God. It doesn’t look too bright. I’m like that woman, unable to stand before God. Just “lay me down”. It’s game over for us all! But then in verse 21 there is a sudden glimmer of hope: “But now…!”

This weekend we will look at the righteousness of God that has been manifested. It comes from outside the law. What is it? How did it get here? How does it impact me?

Our next passage in Romans addresses the underlying attitudes of devout Christians. Lancaster County is such a religious community that we are susceptible to leaning on our knowledge or good works to gauge our spiritual health. Could it be that “God’s name is blasphemed…”(Rom. 2:24) by such thinking?
