Solomon gives us the conclusion of the matter after musing about his failed life experiment. What is it that will bring me true meaning? Where will I find that joy that I’m looking for? How can I order my life while I’m still young in order to avoid the sense that I’m ‘chasing after the wind’?

Why am I not feeling it? Instead of peace, anxious weeds keep sprouting in my mind. Anxiety stems from a combination of life experiences, brain chemistry and personality. In our study, Solomon recounts our lack of control over circumstances, people and outcomes. The anxiety caused can, however, become a force that drives us closer to God. How does that work?

Hope
Why Advent?
During the Advent season we anticipate together the arrival of the Christ-child. It’s good to anticipate. Without the wait, there would be no wonder. Into the darkness a great light has appeared!
In our study we will see some of the hopeless perspectives from ‘under the sun’ and then consider together that Hope is a Person!
Isa. 9:6- “For unto us a child is born…and the government will rest on His shoulders, and he will be called wonderful Counselor, mighty God, everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

This is one of the most fascinating passages in Ecclesiastes. Solomon says, “Do not be over-righteous…why destroy yourself?” (v.16a), and “Do not be over-wicked…why die before your time?” (v.17a). What does he mean here? The law says, “Be holy, as I am holy.” (Leviticus 11:45 & 1 Peter 1:16). Let’s take a closer look this weekend.

Do you have a dream? If it’s not somehow connected to God, then it can end up becoming a nightmare. The ability to enjoy anything comes from God. (Eccl. 2:25). That is why it’s so important to focus on what God’s will is for us, and not our own will. Here is a good place to start: “Give thanks in all things, for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus.” 1 Thess. 5:18.

This passage is about worship! What a break from the meaningless things Solomon worshiped and found so vain. How should we approach God? What does it mean to guard our steps, to stand in awe of God, to listen first, and to be centered? What can help us to foster a new perspective ‘over the sun’?

Freud and Frankl were two brilliant psychologists who lived in Vienna just before World War II. Freud specialized in man’s search for happiness and Frankl specialized in man’s search for meaning. Frankl discovered while living in several concentration camps that without meaning there is no will to live. After reading our passage for this week, life “under the sun” is exposed from various angles as entirely meaningless. What makes the difference for us?

We don’t like unpleasant seasons. We rush. (At least I do).
We try to be like everyone else.
We don’t like change.
What current season are you in?
There is tremendous wisdom here when it comes to the way we interpret the seasons and God’s
timing for things. “He has made everything beautiful in His time.” (v.11a).
