We are excited about this weekend- food trucks, welcoming new members, a brief survey…a fresh reminder of what God has called the church to be. When we are captured by the love of Jesus, His love begins to “compel” or drive us (2 Cor. 5:14)! We start to see the world from God’s viewpoint. There are many ways God can sharpen us and help us to be “ready” to give “…a reason for the hope that is in you.” (1 Pet. 3:15). This weekend I want to look “under the hood” and get a little more specific on what it looks like to be the church.

Last week Bobby left us with a bizarre image of Jonah in mid-air about to splash down into the sea. God had asked Jonah preach to a tough crowd. He says, “no way,” resigns his role as a prophet, and sprints in the opposite direction. Jonah’s freedom experiment fails and his selfishness quickly catches up with him. Through an outlandish course of events Jonah is tossed off the boat by frightened sailors who fear the God that pursues him. This week we’ll explore a near death experience, an unconventional rescue, and a freestyle prayer from inside the belly of a sea beast. It’s in those precise moments of desperation when God is closest to his runaway.

In September we are going to spend time in the book of Jonah. Here we find the tension between the compassion of God and our complacency. It’s wonderful to know that God has a mission for all of us, and that He can even use our failures for good. In chapter one we find Jonah, adrift and asleep to the world around him. When God ‘awakens’ Jonah, good things start to happen.

This weekend will be different. We will have Martin, a Christian professional guitar player from the church in Graz, Austria. He will share some of his story and songs with us. Then we will have a panel discussion with several leaders on why it is important to manage the state of our hearts and how to do so. Like weeds in a garden we are “above all else” to know how to “guard” our hearts so that we don’t end up with regret and heartache.

When God created Eve what was His purpose? For the young man looking for traits in his future wife, what should he look for? For the dad raising his girl, what should he encourage? For the mom investing in her daughter, for the married man to know what to expect, for the single woman mentoring the next generation…what is God’s design for a woman?
When we take a closer look, you can find a woman in her old age so full of joy and praise from others, or you can find a woman having been deceived by culture and full of regret.

For the father, raising boys to be men, for the mother investing in the life of the little guy, for the single woman considering marriage, for the single guy who decides to remain unmarried, for the grandparent, influencing the next generation of men…what does it mean in God’s eyes to be a man?

“Iron man and Thor are not real!” “What?”
When that was stated at Kid’s Camp this weekend, one of the kids gasped in shock! We all have a child-like desire to know that the supernatural exists! We want to know that we can transcend the limitations of this world. Well, this weekend we are going to wrap up our study in Mark, with the very real implications of what it means that Jesus is alive today. When we make the choice to “look up” (v.4), then God begins to reveal Himself to us and it changes everything!!

I could never do justice to the story of the cross. Let’s pray that God will speak to us through His word this weekend. Crucifixions were banned by the 4 th Century A.D. because of the “excruciating” agony they caused. Jesus suffered such physical, emotional and spiritual anguish. Why? Could He not have died an easier, faster death? I believe the cross speaks of the hideous weight of our sin and the depth of God’s love for us. His love was demonstrated on the cross emphatically, unequivocally and personally for every one of us. May you never get over the fact that Jesus loves you!

Wow! Look at all the human failure that led to the death of Jesus. There was envy (Sanhedrin), fear (Pilate), demand (crowd) and arrogance (soldiers). All these characters didn’t realize at the time that God in His sovereignty has the ability to take our human failures and allow them to be used for good- in this case to provide salvation for mankind. How can I get there? How can I overcome the shame and discouragement of my failures? May hope arise in our midst as we choose to look to Jesus and worship Him!
