Yesterday, as a woman walked by me on her way out of a grocery store, she snarled, “Jesus Christ! These PA laws for buying alcohol are ridiculous. How is someone supposed to cope in life?” I thought, “Well, lady, you just answered your own question. Refer back to the first part of your sentence.”
This weekend we will cover the Jewish feasts in Leviticus 23. You may be unaware, but they teach us how to cope with life. Really? Yes! God built into the lunar (Jewish) calendar 7 feasts that all point to Christ! When we take the time to rest and remember, we can celebrate the fact that God has granted us access to His Presence and given us markers to enjoy resting and remembering Him.

As we continue to look into Leviticus and God’s covenant with the nation of Israel, we see some of the moral and behavioral requirements he gave to them. Having rescued them out of bondage in Egypt and taking them to a new “promised land”, called Canaan, God gives them the charge, “You must not do as they do in Egypt, where you used to live, and you must not do as they do in the land of Canaan, where I am bringing you.” (Leviticus 18:3) Today we will look at the ramifications of God’s moral law for us, the Church, who have been “rescued from the dominion of darkness and brought into the kingdom of the son he loves.” (Colossians 3:13)

In our story, two of Aaron’s sons offer unauthorized incense and the Presence of God takes them out (Lev. 10)! What? Is the God of the Old Testament really so different or are we missing something? Our study will take us all the way to the Day of Atonement (Ch. 16). With direct access to the Presence of God, we find ourselves wrestling with our pride. God graciously offers us safeguards along the way.

We are deeply loved by God. However, since Adam and Eve we are independent of God. So the story of Israel being led out into a desert to experience the presence of God becomes our story.
We all have a felt need to connect with God. Each of the five offerings leads us closer into His presence. In Leviticus 8-9 the priests and the tabernacle are dedicated. At the end of Chapter 9, fire comes down from heaven and the glory of God is revealed to all the people. So we might ask, “What is the purpose of a priest?” “What is the meaning of their dedication?” “What effect does it have when people get glimpses of God’s glory?” “Can we still see that today?”

Why is confession such a painful topic when it is actually a gift from God? God knows that we need purification and restitution, and that is why He created the sin and guilt offerings. These last two go hand in hand (Lev. 4, 5 & 6:24-7:10), and they point to what Christ has done for us on the cross. This weekend we will get a closer look: What is sin? What is the real purpose of purification? What is the meaning of reparation?

You are unique. You are loved. You belong!
God has placed the need to know Him and be known by Him in all of us. The story of Israel, is really our story- every one of ours. This young, fledgling nation of Israel was freed from slavery and led into the desert. What was God doing? When the Presence of God was revealed to them, it was fearful. Yet, there was a desire to know Him. The five offerings (we will cover the first three) address the felt needs that we have as we approach God. What do they mean for us today?

It’s the concealed story of Jesus. It will add depth and understanding to the grand love story between you and God. Exodus ends with the glorious Shekinah presence of God descending on the Tabernacle. Next God speaks to Moses to reveal God’s plan to make us whole- to make us belong. So we ask, “What does it mean for the presence of God to be active in our lives today?”

What if God asked you to go to “that guy”? Or “That girl”? Ananias was just going along and doing his thing and God spoke to him in a moment and called him. Called him to be the mouthpiece of God to that guy, that guy that was trying to kill Christians. That guy who was trying to kill people just like him. Are you willing to Go? Are you willing to be faithful? God is pursuing, He is calling. Will you listen?

I thought the story was over. Nineveh was wicked. Jonah ran away. God pursued Jonah. Jonah preached. Nineveh repented. The end.
Chapter four catches us off guard. Why is Jonah now “exceedingly angry” to the point of wanting to die? If you’re like me, I get angry. I just tend to stuff it. Others “wear it” on their sleeve. Since God is gracious and compassionate, He patiently works with us to process our anger. He helps us to reorient and gives us the chance to hit the “reset” button. Let’s see how the story ends with Jonah.

This chapter accounts for the greatest awakening recorded in the Bible. It was a simple five-word message that Jonah shared when 120,000 people admitted and turned away from their wickedness. Here are some topics that surface from Jonah 3:
1. When God speaks to us a second time.
2. The power of a timely word.
3. The power of our brokenness.
4. The spirit of awakening.
