July 7 & 8, 2018
Guest Speaker, Brian Moore
Our passage this week begins with late night singing and ends with a naked man streaking into the dark shadows! Sounds like the makings of a wild party! But in reality it is a night full of greatly significant struggles which can help us in understanding one of the most difficult experiences we have, namely unanswered prayer. Join with us this weekend as we dive into an epic battle which gives hope to the struggles of our daily living.
If you would like to come with a primed mind and heart, take a few minutes to read Psalms 115-118 before coming to the service. Before leaving the Last Supper, Jesus and his disciples sang Psalms 115-118 then went on a late night walk.

How can we make the change from being tightfisted to offering open extravagant love to others? In our passage there’s a woman who pours out a year’s worth of salary (expensive perfume) anointing Jesus for burial, and Judas, who goes out to betray Jesus for 30 pieces of silver. What makes the difference? How can we avoid being gripped by self-regard and set free to offer ourselves in open extravagant love for others?

Are we really in the last days? If so, how should we live? Should we stop saving for retirement, frantically yell out to warn our neighbors, and quit our jobs? In our passage the disciples were certainly concerned about the future. Jesus willingly and in great detail gives them the signs of the times and then some very practical advice on how to live.

What is success when all is said and done? In an attempt to trap Jesus with questions of the law, Jesus gives them the greatest law ever (what makes us successful): loving God with all your heart! This weekend we will explore what that looks like, how it’s possible, and we will even get to see two examples in our text of fake love and true love.

If Jesus if really God, then we must pick a side. This week we look into the “temple showdowns” where the leaders of the day from different spheres look to trap Jesus. As we look at these we could easily step back and say “man, how clear does Jesus have to make it to these people? Jesus has told them numerous times at this point what is going to happen and who he is.” But, the challenge for us is to examine our lives. We must choose a side; each of the groups of people that come to entrap Jesus represent us and how we live our lives today outside of the authority of Jesus. As you read and look ahead examine your heart. You may say with your mouth that you are on Jesus’ side but is your life reflecting that?

This weekend involves the humility of Christ and the challenge for us to be like Him. Eating *“humble pie” can be frightful or fruitful! After seeing the example of Christ (King-Servant), we are challenged to humble ourselves before God. What does that look like? How can we avoid the fearful experiences (the withering of the fig tree or the cleansing of the Temple), to intentionally humble ourselves before God? What would the result be?

According to NPR (Feb. 2014), Master Sgt. Mendoza received a belated Medal of Honor. On Oct. 4, 1944, he single-handedly broke through a German counterattack. Already wounded in the arm and leg, he grabbed a machine gun and ran to the crest of a hill where he saw 200 enemy troops charging up the slopes with flame-throwers, machine pistols, rifles, and hand grenades. He immediately began to engage the enemy, firing five clips.
Here is an example of what it means to be willing to lay down your life for a cause. This weekend we see Jesus on his way to Calvary teaching some valuable lessons about sacrifice. How can we move into this kind of a mindset to rise above our own pride and fears?

Do you consider yourself to be rich? Rich people are not concerned with their daily bread, but with how good their meal tastes, not concerned with whether they have clothing, but with how it looks, and not concerned with whether they have shelter, but with how comfortable it is.
In our passage this week we find out that it is impossible for a rich person to enter the kingdom of heaven (like a “camel passing through the eye of a needle”). What does Jesus mean here? How do riches affect us? Do we need a reminder or something more radical?

Happy Mother’s Day!
(My mom is already in heaven, but I’m interested to see what my kids will do for their mom this week).Ah! Family life leads to personal growth! In our families, God teaches us about softened hearts and
child-like faith. Wow! An understanding of these concepts can lead to personal growth and happiness.

This week we will walk through Mark 9:14-50, where Jesus continues to remind his disciples of his impending death and resurrection. Messiah dead and raised again? It’s a concept and an act of humility that they can’t seem to grasp just yet…
Jesus teaches on the importance of prayer in building up an imperfect faith, as we struggle with self-reliance, through a riveting and heart-breaking story of one father’s journey of pain and struggle.
The passages this weekend are full of lessons on humility, service and radical discipleship. I encourage you to read the passage prior to coming this weekend, and pray for an increase in faith as we all journey on in an uncertain world while navigating the real struggles of faith, self-reliance, and pride. How are we to deal with all of this?
