With our partners we bring you the most pressing topics on your screen and discuss with panel guests that represent the whole value chain contemporary matters with advanced materials, like for example plastics and composites.

Our first editions in fall / winter 2024-2025 are brought to you by our Composites Lounge partner sensXPERT (NETZSCH Group) and will cover the aviation sector.

In particular we will delve deep into "Reinventing Quality and Efficiency in Aviation". To this end Dr Alexander Chaloupka will explain how advanced measurement technologies evolved into a game-changing solution that enable real-time insights, elevating quality control and efficiency in aviation manufacturing.

The first broadcast will be on my personal page at 11 am and you are cordially invited to discuss live with us in the chat and ask your questions. In the afternoon at 2pm there will be a restream on the Composites Lounge LinkedIn Event (Link in the comments) for those who could not make the first round.

This Livepanel is designed for endusers like the aviation, VTOL, drone, space and other airborne technologies.

Future editions will cover the construction, sporting gooods and automotive industry.

In March we will pause, because we all meet at JEC WORLD 2025 in Paris before we commence our new format from April with new verticals.

Said that Composites Lounge is primarily focused on the B2B side of things. We want to align the B2B world, which means in our panel discussions we will ensure to mirror the entire value chain from raw material, substrate and component manufacturing to assembling systems within the OEM industry and operating (enduse) the planes, cars, ships, trains, machines etc.

sensXPERT - Optimizing Plastics Manufacturing receives AVK Award on contactless cure testing in trenchless technologies

During the award ceremony Jens Ridzewski, Prof. Dr.-Ing. held the laudatio and reasoned the award as follows:

"If you also look at the production of liners or the application of liners, it used to be common practice to cure the liners, i.e. for the trenchless rehabilitation of pipes, using steam.

For some time now, UV curing has become established here. In itself a very, very nice topic, but you have to bear in mind that UV curing is of course controlled by how quickly you pull the lamps through the sewer, through the pipe and how thick the material is.

This all has an influence on the degree of cure of the material, and sensXPERT - Optimizing Plastics Manufacturing (NETZSCH Group) has managed to install an in-line system here, which is therefore directly able to determine the cross-linking, the degree of curing, of these liners, and that is important to monitor the quality in-line and then, if necessary, to adjust the process parameters, for example to reduce the speed of passage.

The first two points are the result of this project. The advantage of UV curing over steam curing... the trenchless sewer rehabilitation compared to excavation, especially in urban areas, does not need to be clarified.

The point is precisely what the jury assessed here is the continuous process monitoring and the in-line control of the parameters for the cross-linking of the curing of the liner, so that in principle the risk of having to remove semi-cross-linked liners from the old pipe can be significantly minimized."

Ilkay Özkisaoglu took the opportunity at the JEC Forum DACH 2024 to speak to Dominik Riescher, who represented sensXPERT - Optimizing Plastics Manufacturing after this year's AVK award ceremony.

Ever wondered how you can get the JEC Group innovation award as a sporting goods manufacturer?

This is exactly what I spoke about with Jörg Kaufmann during JEC World 2024.

His statement about his Silbaerg GmbH snowboard "it is the first serial product using the anisotropic coupling effects in a serial product. We started in 2011, one that is pure brand new award with this technology. And since then we are in the premium market with a very special product and a little bit more than the average price for these products and for being available also for other customers. We started to bring glass fibers also into the market.

And nowadays natural fibers are very interesting. We also want to reduce the CO2 footprint of our carbon snowboards and therefore we make a non-woven out of the cutting waste of our carbon snowboards together with the Sächsisches Textilforschungsinstitut e.V. (STFI). And this carbon non-woven is used in the snowboards compared with hemp fibers...: I think we have a the very important and innovative things that nowadays are important to composite technology.FF

First of all, our anisotropic based technology, this is something not a lot other companies have in a serial product. Then we use the dry fiber placement for placing the hemp fibers and these hemp fibers grew up in Saxony, 50 km away from Chemnitz. So I was there at the harvesting of the hemp... And then we have the recycled carbon fibers. So we are circular economy because we use the waste of our dry fiber placement, carbon fiber production for this non-woven. And we have also a bio based resin.

So I think it is a lot of things that are nowadays very important. And I think the combination was the thing why we won the award."

The Composites Industry in THE LÄND has gone through some restructuring.

Join our discussion with Markus Milwich of Deutsche Institute für Textil- und Faserforschung Denkendorf (DITF) ahead of the JEC Forum DACH in Stuttgart in only about two weeks time.

Markus explains the new structure of Allianz Faserbasierte Werkstoffe Baden-Württemberg (AFBW) e.V. with their founding partners Composites United and LBZ.

He also underlines the importance of governmental support, which regrettably ceased for lightweight construction earlier this year.

As to JEC Forum DACH 2024 Markus says, quote many innovative SMEs and large companies conduct research and production in Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg and the neighboring DACH region.

The JEC Forum, organized by JEC Group and AVK, connects the strong composite community of the DACH region in an effective discussion format. The JEC Forum DACH is an important event of the events and activities in the field of lightweight construction, bioeconomy and circular economy in Baden-Württemberg, including the Lightweight Construction Congress on November 6th, the Natural Fiber Congress on October 9th and the Carbon Recycling Congress on February 19th, 2025.

Welcome to another podcast episode where we will talk about the JEC FORUM DACH format with the Regional Director Mrs Anne-Carole Barbarin of the JEC Group (Paris, France) and Elmar Witten of AVK (Frankfurt, Germany).

JEC Forum DACH will be held at the Maritim Hotelgesellschaft mbH Hotel in Stuttgart (Germany) and owing to its particular format business encounters are guaranteed through a matchmaking system between buyers and sellers. For instance last year in Salzburg (Austria) more than 800 scheduled meetings were realised and many many more on site, too.

AVK is the topics organizing partner and we are delighted to have Elmar Witten, Managing Director in our panel as well. We will run quickly through their traditional AVK innovations awards. We want to know, which categories will be priced on site.

Exciting discussions with Dr. Phil on industrial machine learning, algorithms, and deep learning in today's podcast episode.

Dr. Phil Gralla and I discussed industrial machine learning, deep learning, and algorithms. We emphasized the importance of understanding the use case and the machines in use before delving into advanced technologies. Not everything that is labeled AI is actually AI. Many other techniques, such as decision trees and support vector machines, are valuable. It's crucial to choose the right approach for specific applications rather than following trends. In traditional industries like composites and plastics, there may be apprehension about adopting AI, but it should be seen as a tool to support human decision-making, not replace it. Utilizing available data can lead to significant efficiency improvements, as demonstrated by a case involving robot utilization.

Dr. Phil emphasized the significance of statistics in decision-making by machines and the diverse tools available for different applications. Applying AI and machine learning in manufacturing is about supporting efficiency, not replacing human workers.
