We believe that our lives are up to us; we have to make something of ourselves. We get to decide what we’ll do, when we do it, and how we’ll go about it. But when we understand the message of the Scriptures, we see that God is laying out a path for us, the way to follow.

Everything should go well for those who follow God, right? We want to say yes, but our experience contradicts this. We follow God, and things aren’t always good. In fact, sometimes those who are closest to God seem to endure the worst of it all. These Scriptures anchor us in a profound message: Even when all hope seems lost, we can trust in God’s good plan.

We might believe Christians should never struggle. But the losses, the medical diagnoses, the conflicts, the questions still pile up in our lives, too. Our world can be so easily shaken. In the midst of it, we have somewhere else to go- Someone else to whom to turn. God has promised to be our refuge and still the anxiety in our hearts and minds.

Being a Christian is not merely about Sunday morning. Sharing in Jesus’ love and community is not merely about being at church. Jesus cares about everywhere we go, and Jesus will use everywhere we go to build up our trust in Him and to be a witness to His life-changing message. Jesus has promised not only to give us insight for the way but to be with us everywhere we go.

The love of God in Jesus Christ is so powerful that it changes our human perspective. Human nature is self-centered. The new, Christ-like nature is selfless. Motherhood is the definition of selflessness.

It can be very confusing how to live our lives in the midst of the world. Christianity is distinct from the world, but it isn’t always obvious how it differs. It isn’t always clear how our lives should contrast with non-Christians. If we read carefully, we can see that God is not trying to leave us guessing. The Scriptures are clear: Seek your transformation through the peace of Christ and not the whims of the world.

The Bible is a big book, containing many unique types of literature from dozens of different authors, over the span of a millennium. How can we make sense of this whole thing? How can we come to see it clearly? This passage makes explicit what is there under the surface in every story and on every page of Scripture: you are loved by the God who handcrafted you, and your life has a purpose now and forever.
