Concrete Mama: An Unincarcerated Podcast

This week, we're partnering with San Quentin's Uncuffed podcast to bring you their latest episode, "Unexpected Family."

Family can mean a lot of different things. It can be the people we grew up with or the community we choose to keep close. Sometimes, we find family in unexpected places. In this episode, our producers discover long-lost relatives, learn about siblings they didn’t know they had, and even meet family members who seemingly got a second chance at life.

Rachel sets out on a journey to understand how restorative justice practices can help her come to terms with some of her unresolved trauma. Answers come in the form of Eugene Youngblood and Aaron Faletogo, two formerly incarcerated men now entrenched in the realm of community restorative justice work, and Stanley Phillips, who facilitates Washington DOC’s accountability letter bank program. She also sits down with Chris Gates for a deeply healing proxy victim-offender dialogue, which leads each of them to monumental breakthroughs in their respective healing journeys.

In an environment saturated with stigma and designed to keep you isolated, where can you turn to safely talk about your feelings? For a handful of men in WSP’s medium security unit, the answer is Neurodiversity Group – a small weekly gathering that meets in a spare room to share their struggles openly, with love, honesty, and accountability. Through interviews with mental health specialists both inside and outside the Department of Corrections, Demar and Anthony confront the emotionally repressive cultures of gangs and prisons, and Chris Gates finds solace in Neuro Group as he continues learning to connect with others.
