On episode 25 of Concussion Talk Podcast, I talk to Rowan Stringer's father, Gordon. Rowan was 17 years old and a very active multi-sport athlete who died after sustaining two concussions in less than a week while playing high school rugby in Ottawa. Gordon's wife, Kathleen, and he are vocal proponents and advocates for concussion education and awareness in youth sports. In June 2016, 'Rowan's Law' (Bill 149) passed in the Ontario Legislature and became the first piece of legislation in Canada to address concussion and concussion management.There were 49 recommendations from the coroner's inquest into Rowan's death and Bill 149 mandates the creation of a committee that will advise the Ontario Premier on how to implement those recommendations.Gordon Stringer has an important story and an important message.

On episode 23 of Concussion Talk Podcast (#CTP), I talk to Siobhan Karam. Siobhan is a physiotherapist at Sports Medicine Specialists in Toronto and is also a member of Sport Physiotherapy Canada (SPC). Siobhan helped to organize a the SPC Concussion Symposium which was held in Toronto on November 26, 2016. She talks to me about the symposium; who spoke, highlights, what its goal was, how it was received, and more. Siobhan was also a competitive figure skater (ice dancer) for Canada and now coaches at the Toronto Cricket, Skating and Curling Club. We talk briefly about balance, dizziness, and the vestibular system which is important in figure skating, and in concussion management.We talk about the role of physiotherapists in concussion management, and what she sees in her physiotherapy clinic and in her involvement with figure skating.

After several concussions while playing professionally in Europe, Jamie and his wife, Jennifer, saw the need for more to be done around brain injury and concussion in rugby. Together they founded Rugby Safety Network, a new organization aiming to increase the awareness of concussions in rugby. Rugby Safety Network looks to increase awareness not only at the top level of professional rugby, but throughout the system by introducing concussion awareness at schools, rugby schools, and rugby clubs.We talk about important initiatives being taken in Canada with Rowan's Law and Rugby Canada's Play Smart, in Europe and at World Rugby.

On episode 21 of Concussion Talk Podcast (#CTP) I talk to Ironman triathlete Enrico Quilico. In September I was at the Brain Injury Canada conference and I saw Enrico talk about how exercise helped him after his brain injury.Enrico was brain injured in 2006 and since 2008 he has raced in 17 triathlons, including Ironman Lake Placid (3.8km swim, 180km and a 42km run) on July 24, 2016. Convinced of the importance of exercise after brain injury, he did the race as a fundraiser for Brain Injury Canada and raised over $10,000.I talk to Enrico about his brain injury, rehab, and the important role exercise has played in his life since.

On episode 18 of Concussion Talk Podcast I talk to Mike Luke, a World Rugby Medical Educator and Certified Kinesiologist in St. John's, NL. Mike is a co- owner/operator of Pony Locale , a Pilates, Kinesiology, and Massage Therapy studio. In August 2016, Mike was asked to be part of Rugby Americas North (RAN) Mens U19 and Womens 10s Rugby Tournament as a "concussion spotter". I talk to Mike about his involvement with the tournament; what his role was, what he had to do, what he saw, etc.Personally, I have done strength training with Mike several times, and I can attest to his challenging and effective workouts, his enthusiastic and inspiring attitude, along with his unique approach to movement!

In episode 17 of Concussion Talk Podcast I talk to Sandhya and Swapna Mylabathula. They are sisters from Toronto who have done a lot of research on concussions and concussion awareness, with the aim of ultimately bridging the gap between what those who've had a concussion need, and what is available. By working with their Member of Parliament, Dr. Kirsty Duncan (currently the Minister of Science), they helped to draft a Private Member's Bill into Parliament, A Comprehensive Strategy to Address Concussions Across Canada. The Bill has had its first reading in Parliament and is in the process of becoming legislation.We discuss; the Bill and what it entails, their research, and their resulting speaking engagements in Canada and internationally.We also discuss the Brain Injury Canada conference in Toronto in September 2016, at which they will speak and where I hope to do a podcast with presenters/speakers.

On Episode 16 of Concussion Talk Podcast, I will be talking with Moira Merrithew, of Merrithew, mind-body education and equipment (of which STOTT PILATES is a brand) about post-rehab Pilates, knowing and understanding one's body, and how being mindful is important for efficient movement.Pilates is a type of exercise that my sister encouraged me to try after my brain injury and rehab. I began doing Pilates in 2012 (almost nine years after my injury) and I've found it to be incredible! Since I started, I've noticed improvements in my balance, my strength, my overall efficiency of movement, my confidence when I walk and swim, and my energy level.
