BABIES DOWN, BOTTLES UP

Conditional Fears Part 1|3: The GLAUC Squad says mind your own Uterus

Listen Later

In this three-part series, we explore the fears and obstacles faced by parents with visual impairments. Our first episode features four remarkable guests, each sharing their unique perspectives regarding passing down their condition to their children and whether it played a major role in their decision to have kids. Alicia, born with retinoblastoma, grapples with the fear of passing cancer on to her children. J, although she never planned to have children, has become an integral part of raising her nieces. Garrett and Brittney, a married couple of nine years, underwent genetic testing, which confirmed a 50/50 chance of passing Garrett's condition to their kids.

During our conversation, we examine various aspects of parenting with visual impairments. We discuss accepting the reality that their children might inherit the genetic condition, the practical challenges of administering eye drops to babies and children, and finding proactive medical care. We also touch on family dynamics, examining how their families reacted to their decision to have more children despite potential visual impairments. Additionally, we address COVID concerns, highlighting Brittney's pregnancy during the pandemic and the fears associated with medical procedures for their baby.
