I recently saw a question posed in a law firm owner facebook marketing group and I couldn’t respond appropriately in-post, so I created this podcast episode to address all of the things I wanted to say.
It essentially ended up boiling down to four points:
1. Stop being cheap and pay someone to teach you and give you the feedback you need to make these things work.
2. Don’t make people opt-in for things you have. Give them away for free and utilize the facebook pixel to follow up with them.
3. Don’t come after cold people with a billboard ad - it won’t work. Instead use this methodology. It will work.
4. Facebook likes positive stories and positive influence. If your ads are negative or make people feel bad, they will likely NOT be approved.
5. If you are not in the Inner Circle learning about this stuff you’re not smart. Go to https://circleofsmall.com and join today. It’s $147/month to learn how to win with this stuff.

First, shout out to nic peterson, who came up with this… find him, follow him. He's good. Link in show notes…
1. There is a gap between all of the things we know we should be doing and the things we are actually doing consistently every day…
2. It's very easy to go deep on this topic, talk about all the reasons WHY this happens or HOW it happens and research strategies for overcoming it and beating it… but isn't that just exacerbating the problem? Giving MORE things to do and think about, taking even MORE time from the things we know we should be doing?
3. Bumpers is all about how to actually DO more things we should be doing consistently…
4. CAVEAT - this is not a magic pill. At the end of the day YOU are in charge of actively changing your behavior in a way that will invite more favorable circumstances. You have to decide these things are actually important to you…
5. Let's dive in…
6. Concept 1 - a good life lived is not one that successfully dealt with problems that presented themselves but one that understood the things that mattered and accurately measured, managed, and appreciated those things…
7. This is where the idea of "bumpers" come into play. Like on a bowling alley, bumpers allow you to go after life 100% because you've created a mechanism to automatically keep your ball in the lane going toward the pins… (no idea why he used bowling! :) )
remember, bumpers don't exist to protect us from the world. they exist to protect us from ourselves.
8. This is where things get exciting and scary all at the same time… cause those bumpers you put up are only going to work if your pursuits stay aligned with your unique disposition and your life dreams and goals.
9. Step 1 - imagine your perfect day from start to finish… not what society thinks is perfect, or your friends, or your colleagues, or your family, or anyone… YOU.
You want my perfect day (as of writing this?)
10. One caveat… this isn't your perfect day some day in the future when you are stupid rich and can sit on the beach all day drinking mai tais. This is your perfect day today. You have to work. You have to take care of the kids. You have to do certain things in your life. Think of the responsibilities you have and when you would want to do them and work that in…
11. Take five minutes and plot out your perfect day. YOUR perfect day…
12. Your goal now is to make your current life that perfect day, meaning you make choices and plans with others based on that perfect day.
13. Everything is now going to be perfect. Episode over… or not. This isn't going to be easy. In fact, it's going to be hard. But the way to get there is to have reasonable expectations. And the expectation you need to ingrain is to just be better today than you were yesterday. Just win the day you are in right now…
14. Step 2 - determine the non-negotiables in your life. Now that you know what you want your life to look like, irrespective of money, it's time to come up with the non-negotiables that will facilitate your perfect day becoming reality.
15. For example…
16. Now, write down a few non-negotiables… and remember, these are things you would be willing to go to the mats for… not some pushover shit.
Me? Okay…
17. Step 3 - create your bumpers…
18. Take a look at your past week and put everything in buckets according to the time spent for the entire week. Here are some good buckets: work/sleep/eating/family time. If you have any others feel free to add them. You should have a total of 168 hours when you are done.
19. Now take each of those buckets and average them out. If you are going to work 5 days a week divide your work hours by 5. If you are going to sleep every night, divide by 7, etc.
20. This is the part that you're going to want to resist on, but just hear me out… take those averages and put them in your calendar. That's right, the same amount every day. Here's why…
you have the greatest chance for success over the longest period of time if you do the same thing in the same amount of time consistently (this is a topic for an entire podcast episode coming up). When you feel like shit, you do the things. When you feel great, you do the things, AND NO MORE unless you are willing to do them on the days you feel like shit.
when you look at it you're going to want to adjust it… don't. Just try it like this, spreading out across all the days, and see what happens.
Here's how I'd do it. sleep goes in first. Then work. then eating. then family time. the rest if free time for you to fill up however you want.
The only thing I do extra is, if I know there are certain work tasks I want to do every day at a certain time, I'll put those in. For example, I'm doing a facebook live every day. That's inside of the work time specifically.
Here's the key… when the things come up, you do them. No excuses. No questions. When you feel great it's easy. When you don't it sucks.
It will make you the most productive you've ever been, as even if you don't consciously do anything, you'll still have gotten a lot done.
21. Step 4 - moving forward make tiny adjustments every week or two weeks. For example, if you aren't getting enough sleep, increase that time and decrease something else.
22. Something magical will happen - guilt, shame, and that uneasiness of the unknown will disappear. As long as you are inside the bumpers, everything is great.
23. Before we leave, two warnings…
First, communication is key. When you start doing this new stuff, people are going to notice, and they are going to be weirded out.
It's important for you to communicate it to them in a way that helps them understand. This is most important for kids, wife, husband, the people that will see the shift (like you insisting on going to bed at 10 pm EVERY night and waking up at 5 am EVERY day).
Second, get rid of the arbitrary goals and arbitrary timelines. Focus on winning the day. Give yourself time to put in the work to get the results that you want.
That's it… if you happen to be an inner circle member I'm teaching this in depth at our live workshop on June 28th. If you aren't a member right now and want to come, email me and tell you how you can do that…
Cheers.

The secret to your law firm success won't be found in a book.
You can't learn it.
You can't buy it.
You can't manufacture it.
The secret to your law firm success is your ability to show the world who YOU are.
Authenticity is the gateway to success in today's modern world. Only you can be you. Only you can explain why you started your law firm. Only you can explain why you chose your practice area and specific type of client. Only you brings your specific perspective, personality, and energy to your business.
So stop worrying about being judged and start being you.
Embrace your eccentricities. Embrace your nuance. Embrace everything you have to offer that is unique in this world.
The sooner you do that, the sooner your law firm will see the success you want, and the sooner clients will show up ready to say yes to working with you.

I remember a time in my law firm life that I needed to clients NOW. I was just starting out. It was a new practice area. I had no leads, and I needed some cash.
In that scenario I started doing these three things over and over and over again… and guess what? Clients came.
Here are three ways to get law firm clients fast.
1. NETWORKING (my way)
I don't network like normal law firm owners.
I don't promise referrals to my network partners. In fact, I do the opposite, explaining that it's very difficult for me to refer business to them (financial planners in particular).
I have coffees with as many people as I can, knowing that most won't be a good fit, looking for the few that will be a good fit.
I want to know three things when I sit down with a potential network partner. First, what are they doing to generate new business? Second, what are their long term goals? Third, what are they interested in?
If those three things mesh with what I'm looking for then I take the relationship farther.
And, often, the result of at least one or two of those meetings is an instant referral ("I've got a client that does needs that…").
2. GOOGLE ADS
When people need a lawyer they look to google. By paying just a little bit of money you can get right in front of them right away.
The reason you have to pay is those people searching are hiring.
You invest in getting in front of people and you get a return when people sign up.
This is in lieu of SEO, which is a long-term play.
[NOTE: I would not outsource this. Take a few minutes to figure it out on your own so you don't get scammed by someone.]
3. TALK TO YOUR PEOPLE
If you need to get business write an email teaching people a little something in line with what you do and offer to talk to anyone that needs help.
Then, in a couple days, do it again.
You'll almost always catch someone who was just thinking about doing that thing - client!

In talking to many many law firm owners, and looking back on my own actions, it becomes clear pretty quick that we, as humans, hate to be uncomfortable.
The problem with that state of mind and instinct, though, is that it prevents us from getting where we want to go.
For example, take Fred (fake name). Fred is a Syndicate member and we were talking the other day about his business.
I was telling him that he should start creating some content to build brand and get new clients. That the best way for him to grow his business was to do the uncomfortable thing, over and over and over again.
My response above was ignited by his tossing out the idea of opening a satellite office in another city to handle any referrals that would come his way in said city.
Running toward the comfortable (organizing new office, referrals, etc.) instead of running toward the uncomfortable (putting your content out there and helping people find it).
The solution to this problem is to literally just start doing uncomfortable things. The more you do them, the less uncomfortable they get, and the more you grow.
That's it. Now start running toward the uncomfortable!

When I talk to law firm owners about their business there is a constant back and forth between meeting the needs of right now versus meeting the needs of the long-term.
Today I wanted to talk a little bit about both, and how having a unified, intentional strategy can kill both birds with one stone.
To further define what I'm talking about, the marathon of law firm ownership is that idea of building a powerhouse brand, rock solid systems, tested and verified advertising channels, and an amazing team.
Of course, this all takes time. And if it takes too much time when you are starting your law firm, or you just fail to account for the needs that are right in front of you, it can end in disaster.
Which is why you also have to account for the sprint, or your short term, immediate needs (think food and shelter…)
When it comes to the marathon (I'm talking about this first because I know you all want to know how to get law firm clients fast!) we're really talking about branding.
Branding, for me, is all about consistent content creation PLUS distribution with advertising dollars (something i call Unconventional Branding - I've got a class on it…).
What this means is creating a lot of content over a long period of time and pushing it out to the world via all of the free platforms (Facebook, YouTube, iTunes, LinkedIn, Instagram) and all of the paid platforms (all of those same platforms).
Over time, and with the right strategy in place (the unconventional branding strategy), in 6 months to a year you are THE market for your industry).
The sprint uses all of the traditional marketing and advertising things people talk about all the time to get new law firm clients in the door. Law firm networking, google ads for law firms, direct mail for law firms, etc.
These will get you clients right now but don't provide the long-term security of having it all cloaked in brand (translation - you will ALWAYS be doing the short term and long term stuff forever - it's just that over time the return on your spend will get better and better).
As you go through your journey as a law firm owner, remember the marathon and the sprint. You need both to get you where you want to go! ---------------------------------------
