This confession takes place in the late 1980s one dark summer night driving on the historic Rue Napoleon or The Napoleon Road which is a mostly two-lane highway running from Grenoble to Marseilles, thru Pyrenees mountains and mostly rural countryside.

The central village of this confession is Digne Les Bains, a village known at that time for its right-wing local politics, ancient healing warm baths (hence the "Les Bains") and little else.  Digne Les Bains sits around 2500 feet above sea level.

On the night in question, all I saw was a water tower and a family-run gas station.

The rest is the story told herein.

Tonight, we go back 350 years to NYC 1674- when it was just renamed from New Amsterdam.

 For this holiday season episode, I'm trying a new art form of real-time original short story creation. At least it is new for me.

It's Friday the 13th 1959.  Brooklyn NYC. Seasonal late winter mid-afternoon in the upper 40s and cloudy.  

I'm in the 3rd grade when things become very unusual!

Beyond my classroom that day:

The #1 pop song was Frankie Avalon's "Venus" (in blue jeans).

The #1 R&B song was Brook Benton's "It's Just a Matter of Time".

The moon was a waxing crescent.

America was building its interstate highway system.

Jack Paar, the host of The Tonight Show, was on the cover of Life Magazine. 

And the UN voted to end its trusteeship of The French Cameroons, signaling the beginning of the decolonization of the African Continent.

But in my 3rd grade classroom, things were about to get very very very real.
