Seconda parte con Elisa Davoglio. Francesco parte da una provocazione: quarant’anni di quiz televisivi, e siamo ancora intellettualmente interi — l’IA può fare di peggio? Sì, risponde lei. La televisione di Manzi insegnava a leggere; l’algoritmo, se cerchi idiozie, ti serve altre idiozie. Sulla scuola tornerebbe indietro — a Cuore, a programmi meno vasti e meno saltati — proprio per integrare il nuovo. Poi la previsione: una minoranza esigua governerà scenari complessi, il resto sarà fragile e triste, senza più il senso dell’attesa. Alla macchina restano gli schemi; a noi l’ironia e la sfumatura. Ma se la disparità di ricchezza diventa disparità di conoscenza, il sistema regge?

Second part with Elisa Davoglio. Francesco opens with a provocation: forty years of television quiz shows, and we came through intellectually intact — can AI do worse? Yes, she answers. Manzi’s television taught Italians to read; the algorithm, if you search for idiocy, serves you more of it. On schooling she would go back — to Cuore, to syllabuses less vast and less skipped — precisely in order to absorb the new. Then the forecast: a very small minority will govern complex scenarios, the rest will be fragile and sad, with no sense of waiting left. The machine keeps the patterns; irony and nuance stay with us. But if disparity of wealth becomes disparity of knowledge, does the system hold?

Qui il podcast si allontana di proposito da economisti e tecnologi: se la macchina elabora, scrive, crea immagini e perfino simula emozioni, che cosa resta distintamente umano? Elisa riconosce ancora una poesia scritta dall’IA — segue schemi che un occhio allenato coglie — ma la distanza si assottiglia. Il primato che alla poesia resta, dice, è il glitch: l’errore, l’allucinazione, la frizione che costringe a pensare. L’IA è addestrata alla perfezione, e una risposta liscia la accettiamo passivi. Se deleghiamo alla macchina anche le parole per i figli e gli amici, che cosa stiamo firmando?

Here the podcast deliberately steps away from economists and technologists: if the machine processes, writes, makes images and even simulates emotion, what remains distinctly human? Elisa can still spot a poem written by AI — it follows patterns a trained eye catches — but the distance is thinning. The primacy poetry keeps, she says, is the glitch: the error, the hallucination, the friction that forces us to think. AI is trained to be perfect, and a smooth answer we accept passively. If we hand the machine our words for our children and friends too, what are we signing?

Sullo sfondo, la concentrazione: pochi laboratori padroni dei grandi modelli, un solo produttore di chip di vertice. Difficile vedere, qui, un potere che pareggia: e se l’IA, invece di ridurre le diseguaglianze, le allargasse?

Some American companies have begun listing their robot employees on the balance sheet alongside the humans: 147,000 people, 25,000 machines. But how do you count a robot — is it worth one, two, ten? And what does the company ask of whoever must manage it? Enter “robo-management”, the art of leading a workforce that is partly machine. In the background, concentration: a handful of labs command the large models, a single maker supplies the top-tier chips. Hard to see a levelling power here — and what if AI, rather than narrowing inequality, widened it?

L’IA porta tutto all’estremo. Ma un report recente coglie il paradosso: a forza di tagliare inefficienze si tagliano anche i posti di lavoro, i salari e le attività — non solo economiche, anche sociali — che quelle inefficienze tenevano in piedi. E i clienti, senza più reddito, con che cosa comprano? Un sistema perfettamente ottimizzato può ottimizzare via anche i propri clienti?

Online commerce has already shortened the chain: from producer to consumer, skipping middlemen and shopkeepers, with lower prices for buyers and higher margins for sellers. AI takes it to the extreme. But a recent report catches the paradox: cutting inefficiencies also cuts the jobs, the wages and the activities — not only economic but social — that those inefficiencies sustained. And customers, left without income, buy with what? Can a perfectly optimised system optimise away its own customers?

Quattordicesima parte con Stefano Nocentini. La difesa ha sempre contato: quante armi, quanti uomini, quanti mezzi ha il nemico. Ma l’11 settembre non aveva grandi numeri — solo un piccolo nucleo di persone e un danno enorme. L’IA sposta il baricentro dai grandi numeri al singolo: nella sicurezza, nell’intelligence, nella polizia. E lo stesso vale per la cura: un robot che ti fa il prelievo del sangue, tutto sommato, lo accettiamo; una casa di riposo gestita soltanto da robot è un’altra storia. Dove finisce l’efficienza e comincia ciò che non vogliamo delegare a una macchina?

Fourteenth part with Stefano Nocentini. Defence has always been about counting: how many weapons, how many men, how much materiel the enemy has. But 9/11 had no big numbers — only a small cell of people and enormous damage. AI shifts the centre of gravity from the mass to the individual: in security, in intelligence, in policing. The same holds for care: a robot that draws your blood, on balance, we accept; a care home run entirely by robots is another matter. Where does efficiency end, and where does what we refuse to hand to a machine begin?

But if I take the struggle out of learning — AI condenses thirty pages into one, turns them into slides, prepares the flashcards, even an auto-generated podcast — what is left of what I think I have learnt? Hence a school to rethink from scratch: no longer to deliver information, but to teach how to certify it. In the background, a new “AI divide” that hits the elderly hardest. If the machine removes the effort of learning, do we really learn more — or only faster?

Ep. 12 · Che cosa chiamiamo lavoro

Dodicesima parte con Stefano Nocentini. Se il reddito si sgancia dal lavoro, forse è la parola stessa a dover cambiare. In Italia i lavoratori “retribuiti” sono 24 milioni su oltre 60: se lavoro fosse solo quello con la busta paga, parleremmo di una minoranza. Ma lavoro è anche attività, idee, contributo alla società — e allora il volontario, lo studente, la casalinga, il pensionato sono lavoratori a pieno titolo. Ridefinire il lavoro significa ridefinire la dignità: quella non si prende dallo stipendio. In un mondo in cui le macchine fanno sempre più cose, da dove viene il valore di una persona?

Twelfth part with Stefano Nocentini. If income comes unhooked from work, perhaps the word itself has to change. In Italy the “paid” workers are 24 million out of more than 60: if work meant only the payslip, we would be talking about a minority. But work is also activity, ideas, contribution to society — so the volunteer, the student, the homemaker, the pensioner are workers in full. To redefine work is to redefine dignity — and dignity is not drawn from a salary. In a world where machines do ever more, where does a person’s worth come from?

Undicesima parte con Stefano Nocentini. Per oltre un secolo il lavoro è stato il modo in cui si distribuiva la ricchezza. Se una quota crescente del valore la producono i sistemi autonomi, quel legame si allenta — e allora quale contratto sociale prende il posto del vecchio? Stefano parte da un caso concreto: il Qatar, dove ai cittadini bastano le azioni del petrolio per vivere senza lavorare. Il risultato, però, non è un paradiso: i giovani perdono lo stimolo a studiare, a impegnarsi, a inventare. Perché il lavoro non è solo reddito, è realizzazione. Redistribuire la ricchezza, forse, non basta: come si redistribuisce il senso?

If a growing share of value is produced by autonomous systems, that link loosens — so what social contract takes the old one’s place? Stefano starts from a concrete case: Qatar, where oil shares are enough for citizens to live without working. The result, though, is no paradise: the young lose any incentive to study, to strive, to invent. Because work is not only income — it is fulfilment. Redistributing wealth may not be enough: how do you redistribute meaning?

Decima parte con Stefano Nocentini. Quanto le imprese usano davvero l’intelligenza artificiale, e quanto credono di saperne? Uno studio della Banca d’Italia mette in fila i numeri: solo l’11% delle aziende la usa già, un terzo la ritiene irrilevante per la propria attività e più di un quarto non capisce nemmeno la domanda. E dove la si usa, è quasi tutta automazione: appena il 3,6% pensa a prodotti nuovi. Ma i posti di lavoro nuovi nascono proprio lì — dalle startup, dalle idee, da chi è nato dentro l’IA — dove l’Italia, e con lei gran parte d’Europa, arranca. Fortissimi a regolare, deboli a innovare: quanto ci costerà?

Tenth part with Stefano Nocentini. How much do firms actually use AI — and how much do they think they know? A Bank of Italy study lines up the numbers: only 11% of companies already use it, a third consider it irrelevant to their business, and more than a quarter do not even understand the question. Where it is used, it is almost all automation: barely 3.6% are thinking about new products. Yet the new jobs are born precisely there — in start-ups, in ideas, in those native to AI — where Italy, and with it much of Europe, lags behind. Strong at regulating, weak at innovating: what will it cost us?

The paradox: globally, job destruction and creation tend to balance out — but not in the same place. If I automate taxis in Rome and the new jobs appear in Silicon Valley, the sums don’t add up for Italy. And then the harder question: if AI does young people’s work, who trains tomorrow’s senior professionals?
