The Brockway School Board got to see what a grant-funded plasma cutter can do.

The computer-aided design plasma cutter allows teacher Matt Holt and his students to draw what they want to cut using a computer program. Once the design is done, then the plasma cutter cuts out the design on metal. Holt explained the cutter and how it helped them create a sign for the school's tennis courts.

As a thank-you to the board, Holt and his students teamed up with Kyle Norman’s wood shop classes to make new name plaques for each board member. The wood plaques have a metal plate on the front with the boardmember’s name cut out.

This Friday is opening night for James and the Giant Peach at the Reitz Theater in DuBois!

The show kicks off this Friday at 7:30 with an opening night gala featuring snacks from Martin's Grocery. This Saturday at 7:30, it's a special sign language interpretation by jenny Gordon alongside the show. A matinee performance will be Sunday at 2.

The show continues next weekend as well, Oct. 17-19.

Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for students, children, and senior citizens.

Gene Deible, who is directing the classic children's adventure story, says this show feature some handmade puppets, operated by some amazing local puppeteers.

This Thursday, Oct. 10, is the 24th Annual Anne S. Thacik Charity Auction at the Knights of Columbus in Clearfield, with proceeds benefiting local senior citizens!

The doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the evening begins at 6 with a silent auction, Chinese auction and various games of chance.

The live auction begins at 7 p.m., with Matt Day as emcee, and local favorites, Pat & Stephanie Errigo, as auctioneers.

Wine, hors d’oeuvres and a variety of desserts will be available throughout the evening for your enjoyment.

More than 100 items are on the docket to be auctioned, including dining out packages, exquisite art work, autographed items, event tickets, theme baskets, electronics, hand-made items, and much more.

The Brockway Fire Department is hosting a recruiting day next Sunday, Oct. 13 at 10 a.m. The event will be held at the fire hall in Brockway. The event is attempting to combat the decline in volunteers throughout the state.

Brockway has seen a drop in manpower since 2016. Just three years ago, 12 firefighters responded to a call. Now, they have 7 or 8 people, not counting fire police.

Brockway Fire Captain Mike Hoskavich hopes that the event will bring in new members.

The goal of the event is to give attendees an overview of what it means to be a firefighter in Brockway. Those who choose to come will learn how to put on the gear, how to pull a hose lines, what it feels like to have water going through that hose, and how hard it can be to cut open a car. The department will have a car on site to cut open.

Anyone interested in attending the event can call the Brockway Volunteer Fire Department at 268-4000 or send a message through Facebook. However, the department will not turn anyone away if they show up at the event. Refreshments will be provided, along with a Brockway FD t-shirt.
