With all of our local students back in class for the new school year, it also means that they’ll be eating one meal away from home... lunch. We have some advice for packing healthy lunches!

If you’re packing that lunch for them, here are some tips from food and nutrition specialist, Sandy Proctor.

Proctor says you should try to pack a balance of grains, protein, fruits, vegetables, and dairy.

You'll also need to remember any restrictions your school district has in place. For example, some schools are not allowed to have peanuts or peanut butter.

Keep cold foods chilled, likely with an ice pack. Another option is to have your child purchase cold things, like milk, from the cafeteria's refrigerated section.

Congratulations to Nancy Micks, the 2019 recipient of the Silver Ribbon Award from the DuBois Chamber.

Nancy had been the longtime director of the DuBois Chamber until she retired in 2015, but the award celebrated not just what she did in business but especially all of the volunteer work she’d done in the community over the years.

If you’re throwing some burgers on the grill for Labor Day, make sure that you're cooking them safely! We have some tips.

Janell Goodwin from the USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline says don’t just assume that you can tell it’s safely cooked just by looking at it.

Your meat thermometer should read at least 160 for ground beef in hamburgers. If you’re cooking steaks or cuts of meat, the temperature should be 145. For any chicken, it’s a little higher, 165.

If you need to thaw frozen food, do it by leaving it in the refrigerator, not out on a counter or in the sink.

The 2019 Summer Music Fest at DuBois City Park ends with a big celebration tonight, sponsored by the City of DuBois!

This time, it starts early at 6 p.m. The band The Elements will play from 6 until 8.

There will be other entertainment, snacks, and activities.

The DuBois City Council members and other officials will be grilling up some free hot dogs and offering refreshments!

It's a great night out for the entire family.

Bring a lawn chair, but some bleacher seats available.

A town-hall meeting addressing concerns about the environment – “Protecting Our Pennsylvania Wilds” – will be held Thursday, Aug. 29, at 7 p.m. at the Limestone Fire Hall in Clarion.

Speaker Mark Dixon, a filmmaker and member of NoPetroPa, will talk about the petrochemical industry’s plan to develop plastics manufacturing in the region, specifically the ethane cracker plant in Beaver County, and the potential side effects of doing so.

The event is sponsored by Indivisible We Rise, Protect Environment & Children Everywhere (PEACE) and the League of Women Voters of Clarion County.

So maybe you missed out on a summer vacation. There are still cheap travel deals in the upcoming weeks, in what’s known as the shoulder season.

“This is kind of a dead season, coming up before the holidays, after the summer.” That's according to consumer expert Janice Lieberman.

Lieberman says timing’s key here.

“Usually you have to travel by Oct. 15, but that’s a lot of time before the holidays come.”

You’ll also need to act soon, because fares usually drop from peak summer prices to shoulder rates by Labor Day, and then they begin to rise steadily to holiday rates by mid-October.

Rovers fall, 43-14

It was a night of insane stunts and good fun as wrestlers came together to support one of their own.

In July, Crazii Shea (whose real name is Erik), a local wrestler and entertainer from Clearfield County, was badly burned while performing his signature fire breathing routine.

The bad luck continued the night of the accident. His fiancee struck a 300-pound black bear, totaling her car, as she was following the ambulance to the hospital.

Although he’s recovering well, his fellow performers at Asylum Pro Wrestling wanted to make sure his expenses were taken care of.

They held a benefit show for him in Clearfield Saturday night, featuring lots of matchups, including one with Crazii Shea himself.

He says he wants to give back to the community and give people, especially kids, a positive way of using their energy and athletic skills.

Their next show in the area will be on Sept. 21 at the Clearfield County Fairgrounds.
