Looking for a fun, inexpensive, and thought-provoking night out? Come to the screening of local short films this Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Reitz Theater in DuBois. The cost is $5 and goes towards NAFCO, the Northern Appalachian Film Collective, which strives to bring more filmmaking to our area. James Neiger, president of NAFCO, says it’ll be an ongoing project, with a new film each month until April.

For more than 100 years, DuBois Central Catholic has provided another option for students in our area to get an education in a family-like religious setting. DCC was honored as one of the Hometown Hope recipients from Steeple Furniture and Sunny 106, providing an advertising grant for local non-profits.

Joyce Taylor, public relations and alumni affairs coordinator at DuBois Central Catholic, says it all comes down to serving God.

However, one common misconception, she says, is that students have to be Catholic to attend the school. For this year, about 30 percent of students are not Catholic, and DCC welcomes students of all faiths.

Another common misconception is that all DCC families are wealthy. In fact, most families (about 70 percent) get some kind of financial assistance for their students to be at DCC.

Taylor says the students truly blossom when they come to the school because of the small setting and because everyone is included.

Steeple Furniture awarded the Hometown Hope grant to DCC for their outstanding commitment to the community and encouraging their students to give back. Many thanks to Steeple for yet again donating to a worthy, local cause!

The community raised $1,700 to see Dr. John Toole, a Penn State DuBois math professor, shave off all of his hair, long beard, and mustache. The money goes to Penn State THON and the fight against childhood cancer.

Brookville’s longtime officer Vince Markle has accepted the position of Brookville’s new chief of police. Chief Markle has been with the Brookville Borough Police for 20 years. He's worked extensively with the DARE anti-drug program and with the Jefferson County Drug Task Force.

Terry Khoury, public relations coordinator from the agency, says Clearfield County Area Agency on Aging is involved in many more programs than people might expect. It takes money and volunteers to make it work, so the donation from Steeple Furniture was much needed.

The CCAAA’s mission is to care for the elderly while maintaining their dignity. They help families find in-home services, make transitions into nursing homes, find health care, run Meals on Wheels programs, manage the Centers for Active Living throughout Clearfield County, host the Giving Tree donations for seniors during the holidays, and are there to answer whatever questions families might have about older relatives.

Julie Baun, librarian at the DuBois Area Middle School, assures parents that, no matter what is decided for the district, the teachers are dedicated to taking care of the students.
