Profiles in Advocacy: Dan Walters Helps Make Change by Being the Changemaker Himself

This episode of Profiles in Advocacy takes us to the post-secondary education sector in Ontario.

Host Melanie Taddeo chats with Dan Walters, who is both a lecturer and the man who coordinates practica for students at Ontario Tech University in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities.

For Dan, this is more than a job of synching up a practical learning setting with the University’s requirements for a student to graduate; his focus is on finding the right ingredients to achieve a qualitive level of empowerment and self-determination for the individual. His method follows the ancient practice of listening, so as not to make assumptions, and to achieve a greater understanding about authentic accessibility and inclusion.

As Dan explains, he's always looking around, self-reflectively, asking: who is not included in the dialogue – whose voice hasn’t been heard at the table?

This episode of Profiles in Advocacy features host Melanie Taddeo and Sean Pickard. Sean is the Station Manager for V4A Studios in Canada. He also lives with a brain injury.

Connect4Life Hosts “SolutionFest”, a Dialogue on Inclusion for UN Day December 3, 2025

Every December 3, the United Nations observes the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. This year’s UN theme is Fostering disability inclusive societies for advancing social progress. As part of Connect4Life’s celebration and our contribution to the global dialogue around inclusion, we present this special episode – SolutionFest 2025: Making a World Inclusive of People with Disabilities.

Melanie Taddeo, President and CEO of Connect4Life, hosted this online panel discussion, which was recorded on November 19, and features Lilly Cereghini, Paige Whitehouse, Prateek Mohanty and Sean Pickard, each of whom lives a disability.

What you’ll hear is the unedited conversation of Melanie and her four guest panelists deliberating on the issues of priority, the roles of national and sub-national governments, the roles of people with disabilities as well as their families and communities, and the question of building and sustaining meaningful bridges between those with disabilities and the able-bodied.

Consistent with this year’s theme for UN International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2025, as well as the fundamental activity of the United Nations – which, in essence, is to conduct respectful and peaceful dialogue around issues and concerns that help advance all of us, this dialogue highlights lived perspectives, and it also suggests solutions and recommended actions, all from a Canadian perspective.

A Melanie Minute: Obstacles, Then and Now

Saturday November 29, 2025

Forty-four years ago, the first-of-its-kind report was released by the Government of Canada. That report was called Obstacles.

The year 1981 was designated as an international year highlighting persons with disabilities. Canada’s national government took a bold step in advance of that UN year, and launched a nation-wide comprehensive review on inclusion, accessibility, the lives of Canadians with disabilities and the role of the Government of Canada. The committee that undertook that historic study travelled throughout Canada, listening, reviewing and learning.

The result was the report called Obstacles.

And the reason we have produced this special Melanie Minute in advance of the 2025 UN Day of Persons with Disabilities is how this episode fits nicely within our season three focus on Profiles in Advocacy. You see, that committee in 1981 was chaired by a deeply passionate Canadian who helped put disability issues into the national dialogue – the Late Honourable David P Smith, who at the time served as a Member of Parliament and later as a Senator. Senator Smith also championed the inclusion of disability into the content of Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms, which became law the very next year, in 1982.

So in this Melanie Minute, Melanie Taddeo, President and CEO of Connect4Life pays tribute to the work of our former parliamentarians, to the vision that supported and produced the Obstacles report, and to the leadership of the Honourable Senator David P Smith.
