In school, testing is an opportunity to reveal your understanding. In life, testing is an opportunity to reveal your faith.
Sometimes God puts us in difficult positions to test us. And believe it or not many of Jesus miracles involve the testing of faith. The miracle of Jesus walking on the water marks the second, not the first time that Jesus used the storm on the Sea of Galilee to test His disciples.
Have you ever thought about the fact that sometimes your problems may be engineered by God so that you will learn how to depend on Him for times of even greater stress in the future? God is always up to something in the lives of His people, and this week we're going to learn what He was doing through His Son, Jesus Christ, the day He walked on the water.

Jacob's struggle with his identity and worth stemmed from a deep insecurity and fear of not measuring up to what he believed he was destined to be. He felt the weight of his inadequacies and constantly sought validation and fulfillment through his own efforts rather than trusting in God's plan for his life.
Despite his strong ambition and desire for greatness, Jacob's lack of faith and reliance on himself led to a cycle of deceit, manipulation, and comparison with others. He believed that he needed to constantly prove his worth and achieve success on his own terms, rather than surrendering to God's will for his life.
Jacob's inability to bridge the gap between who he was and who he wanted to be, ultimately caused him much pain and struggle. It was only after a series of trials and encounters with God that he began to understand the importance of surrendering to God's plan and trusting in His grace to fulfill his destiny. Jacob seemed to forget that true fulfillment and greatness comes from aligning oneself with God's will, rather than relying on one's own efforts and ambitions.
But then he wrestled an angel.
And he accepted himself.
And he got a new name.

I'm not a fan of Pinterest!
Maybe you aren’t a Pinterest user. Maybe for you it is HGTV or Food Network. Maybe it is Facebook or X. Maybe it is your pastor or neighbor that is super fit or the soccer mom that always looks perfect at the soccer park on any given day of the week no matter what time of the day it is. You look at them and wonder why you can’t have it all together and measure up to their level of abilities and perfection.
Obviously with these multiple examples, the problem with comparison isn’t limited to one particular platform. It is actually a mind-set. The only problem with Pinterest or HGTV is the problem inside of us. It’s the perfect platform for us to have the tendency to perform, to pose, and to pretend, all in an effort to lift up our low self-esteem.
This mindset has to stop, and Jacob’s life teaches us why. To recap where we have been, Jacob’s life showcases some not-so-great tendencies and lifestyles of pretending, manipulating, and deceiving. The other item in this list of issues is comparing.
Do you find yourself comparing your life to everyone else's snapshots? I've been victim of that many times! How do we knock comparison out of our life and learn to live in the provision God has given us? Sometimes, it is a difficult thing to do!
This week we are going to tear down those walls of comparison in this episode of Connecting the Gap. This is probably one of my favorite episodes in this series.

The story of Jacob shows that a life driven by self-serving motives can lead to prolonged struggles, broken relationships, and unfulfilled desires. Jacob's journey taught him the hard way that his manipulative tactics and self-centered behavior did not bring lasting satisfaction or true fulfillment.
Similarly, many people find themselves caught up in the cycle of self-preservation and self-advancement, constantly striving to secure their own interests at the expense of others. This mindset can lead to a sense of isolation, mistrust, and emptiness, as individuals prioritize personal gain over meaningful connections and genuine compassion.
While it may seem natural to focus on our own goals, needs, and desires, an excessive preoccupation with self can ultimately hinder our growth. Constantly putting up defenses, plotting ahead, and engaging in manipulative behaviors can create barriers between ourselves and others, preventing us from experiencing authentic relationships and genuine satisfaction.
That was Jacob. Always looking out for himself. Always the master of his fate. Always alone against the world.
But God didn’t design us for that.

When I was a kid, I created my fair share of fake identities. I used to watch karate movies and try to work on all the karate moves and would have fake fights. It wasn’t that I was trying to be something that I wasn’t or that I was trying to deceive anyone. Maybe it was just me trying to belong or maybe it was too uncomfortable to embrace who I was. It might have even been a little bit of both.
I also remember my friend and I riding bikes and acting like we were semis pulling big loads. At one point we even said that we would be a truck driving team when we got older. We’d back into a ditch and act like we were at a loading dock unloading our cargo and getting a new load.
Those were the days! Countless times as a kid I would be something different and live in a land of make believe. That’s just what kids did back in those days when they didn’t have a tv to watch and it was in pre-cellphone days!
When we grow up, we may be a little more sophisticated than kids, but our ability to pretend who we are is just as perfected. Sometimes maybe even more and not even in a good way! To quote the inimitable prince, “All of our life’s a stage, everybody’s stars, reality’s so blurry.”
Have you ever thought about how much of our lives revolves around us? Appearance, image, reputation, and recognition play a significant role in our daily lives. From the way we present ourselves in public to the way we interact with others, these factors shape how others perceive us and how we perceive ourselves.
There are three different Me's I have struggled with. You probably have as well. Sometimes, you may have not even realized the battle was taking place. This week we will discuss that on this episode.

True happiness does not solely rely on self-improvement or the elimination of our flaws. While change and growth are essential components of personal development, they should not be pursued blindly for the sake of change itself. It is vital to understand that our weaknesses do not necessarily dictate our happiness, and that true contentment comes from acceptance, and living authentically.
In essence, while striving to be the best version of ourselves is commendable, it is essential to acknowledge that the pursuit of perfection alone does not guarantee fulfillment. Change should be approached with intention and reflection, focusing on personal growth and well-being rather than an unattainable state of flawlessness. Embracing imperfection and finding joy in the journey of self-discovery can lead to a more meaningful and satisfying life.
Therefore, perfection is not the cure. Change is good. Change is necessary. Change is inevitable. But change for the sake of change is overrated.
This week we continue our study on feeling unqualified. Starting next week, we will begin a case study of Jacob as we spiral towards the end of this series. It's getting good!

When it comes to our weaknesses, we tend to oscillate between two extremes. We wallow in our weaknesses, or we pretend they don’t exist. The problem with having a pity party about our weaknesses is that we authorize ourselves to contradict the calling that God has placed on our lives and we in essence deputize ourselves to be our own disqualifier.
When we wallow in our weaknesses, we give them power over us. We allow them to dictate our worth and potential, instead of recognizing them as areas for growth and improvement. This can lead to a defeatist attitude, limiting our ability to fulfill our purpose or calling.
On the other hand, when we try to ignore or downplay our weaknesses, we are not being honest with ourselves. We are not addressing the areas where we need to improve, which can hinder our personal and spiritual growth. Pretending our weaknesses don't exist can also prevent us from getting the help from God that we need, further isolating us from potential growth opportunities.
In the end, both extremes prevent us from aligning ourselves with God's plan for our lives. Instead of embracing our weaknesses as opportunities for growth and relying on God's strength to overcome them, we either succumb to self-pity or deny their existence altogether.
Backstories can shed a lot of light on how things may seem to be, but God can make it different. This week we look at some stories in the Bible where certain individual's backstories would predict that they would never be useful to God. But God changed the narrative.

Ever wondered how your deepest weaknesses could actually be the stages for God's greatest work? This week on Connecting the Gap, we will discuss those topics as we endeavor to navigate the path of overcoming weaknesses through God's power. Many times in our lives, we think we have the solution all figured out to our problems and the way we think of ourselves, then .... God does the total opposite of what we expected! How do we navigate through that? Drawing from Isaiah 55:8-9, we have to come to an understanding that God's ways are incomprehensibly higher than ours and how trusting in His plan can turn our trials into triumphs.
This week we also tackle the human craving for quick fixes to our imperfections and how God's counterintuitive approach involves letting our weaknesses persist so His strength can shine.

If discovering God’s identity is so important, how do we find out who God is? How can we comprehend the invisible, eternal, all-powerful, all-knowing creator of the entire universe?
How do we relate to the God who bends time and space and gravity to his will? Especially when there are infinite interpretations that often violently contradict one another?
It sounds intimidating but it doesn’t have to be. When it comes to God, we don’t have to look very hard. He revealed himself in Jesus.
This week we talk about the problem we have sometimes of being our selfie! We are who we are in Christ, but we have to come to a place to wrap our minds around that.
