Listen in on a conversation with Alexis Sanchez, a nurse, artist and musician who connects many of our previous conversations as they relate to Xicanism, Indigeneity, and arts. She also happens to be one of few confirmed descendants of the 9,000 year old human skeleton known as the Kennewick Man, aka the Ancient one. There were issues with the audio recording but we wanted to share the conversation with our listeners.
Nathan Orosco, a Chicano artist, was born in Odessa, TX and received his B.A. in Studio Art at The University of Texas of the Permian Basin in 2000 and his M.F.A in Sculpture at Washington State University in 2002. He is currently an Instructor of Art at Mt. Hood Community College where he teaches sculpture, drawing and design. Nathan Orosco’s work has been exhibited nationally including exhibits at the Museum of Arts Culture in Spokane WA and the Mexic-Arte Museum in Austin, TX.
Listen to find out how a boy from an industrial town found a way to break out of the laborer mold and pave his own path. Listen to find out how you could trace your lineage way back to Meso-American peoples and to realize that we were here before the European conquests. That makes this earth below your feet your earth. You are free to roam and discover. Find out how he creates art that pays homage to his past and homage to the ways of his Native, Indio ancestors.
Quote of the show: “Artists understand the way people visually feel and how those visual things can impact the psyche”

Gallery Co-founders Abel Rodriguez and Edgar-Arturo Camacho-Gonzalez bring their know-how, charm, and creativity to C/S. Learn how a symbolic comal (a griddle used to make tortillas) has turned a California community into a cultural hub, opening its doors and paving the way for LatinX peoples to own art creation and art experiences. It is through this cultural center that they have torn down the intimidating white gallery walls and have produced a space that brings the family together, a lot like a traditional LatinX kitchen will. Listen in to see how they continue to bring community together in a digital world and in their physical art space.

Pavel Acevedo is a talented printmaker blending a traditional style with contemporary imagery. Relief printing takes a sure hand and disciplined practice to get what Acevedo creates. The calculated gouges on a woodblock or linoleum block evolve into powerful deep statements of individual narrative. Through his prints, he tells us about his surroundings and the people that live in them. He runs his own studio out of Riverside, CA and you can find him on Instagram @pavel_acevedo and on Speedball's featured artists at https://www.speedballart.com/pro-artist-network/pavel-acevedo/.
