The White House is depending on the Taliban to give evacuating Americans "safe passage" to the Kabul airport just six weeks after President Biden said that he doesn't trust the terrorist group.

National Security adviser Jake Sullivan joined White House press secretary Jen Psaki at the podium for a press conference on Tuesday, where they took questions about the fallout from the Afghanistan troop withdrawal, which has seen the Taliban surge back into control of country.

Sullivan told the assembled reporters that the administration expects the Taliban "will have to be watched and observed over time" on whether the terrorist group is "prepared to meet their obligations to the basic human rights and human dignity of people, to the safe passage of people, to the airport."

"The Taliban have informed us that they are prepared to provide the safe passage of civilians to the airport, and we intend to hold them to that commitment," Sullivan also said during the briefing.

Sullivan also noted the administration is "in contact with the Taliban to ensure the safe passage of people to the airport."

President Biden appeared to go back on his campaign promise to "take responsibility" as commander-in-chief and not "blame others" during his speech on the botched withdrawal from Afghanistan that has seen the Taliban swiftly retake control of the country – and outcome Biden previously claimed was "highly unlikely."

Biden on Monday suggested that the withdrawal debacle was the result of the peace deal he "inherited" from former President Donald Trump and claimed his only options were between "escalating the conflict and sending thousands of American troops back into Afghanistan."

"I stand squarely behind my decision. After 20 years, I learned the hard way that there was never a good time to withdraw U.S. forces," Biden said. "That’s why we're still there."

State Sen. Tony Navarrete, a Democrat from Phoenix, who was arrested on Thursday and is accused of multiple counts of sexual conduct with a child, was released on a $50,000 bond Saturday morning. Navarrete is also accused of molestation with a minor.
According to court documents released late Friday afternoon, on Aug. 4, a 16-year-old boy told detectives during the first incident, Navarrete put his hand down the victim's pants and touched him inappropriately and that Navarrete would go on to do this several times. The victim said this happened to him more than five times. Navarrete also reportedly touched the victim's 13-year-old brother's upper leg, who had to hit his hand away, documents state.
