Lockdown to last until Aug 31 - The government has decided to extend lockdown measures until the end of the month in the face of rising Covid-19 infections, but banks and financial institutions located in department stores will be allowed to reopen, said a government spokesman.

The ‘Sandbox Express Bus’, which was to cease operations today (Aug 16), has been extended to continue taking Sandbox tourists from Phuket to Suvarnabhumi airport in Bangkok until at least Aug 30, and Sandbox tourists can now also choose to take a private minivan to the capital, officials confirmed today.

Region 8 Police Chief has donated 51 smart card readers and 20 smartphones to be used at the Phuket Check Point leading on to the island to ensure that no people wanting to come to Phuket are wanted on outstanding arrest warrants.

The lockdown in the heart of Phuket Town will not be lifted until further ‘active case finding’ tests are conducted today and submitted to the Phuket Communicable Disease Committee for consideration, Phuket Town Mayor has confirmed.

New measures have been ordered by the provincial communicable disease committee to curb the latest outbreak of Covid-19, which has been linked to workers' camps, factories, and other workplaces on the island.

Thai man held for the slaying of a Swiss tourist in the Phuket sandbox, police to give more details on Sunday - Police have arrested a 27-year-old Thai man who has reportedly confessed to the killing of a Swiss tourist, two days after her body was found at a local waterfall.

Police fired tear gas, rubber bullets, and water cannon on anti-government protesters on Saturday, the culmination of a running battle in which demonstrators were forced to change their destination three times.

Thailand has moved into the third-lowest tier in the world for internet freedom, down two steps from the year before, according to Comparitech, a website that focuses on improving cybersecurity and privacy online.

Food supplies at markets and supermarkets are reducing amid partial closures and subsequent reduced production capacity at almost 100 food processing plants nationwide, following the spread of COVID-19 among their workers. Some items have reportedly run out, with certain shops and stalls forced to close.
