  • The Work Is the Easy Part: A Contractor’s Messy Middle

Andrew dropped out of engineering school with $50K in student loans, moved back to Pittsburgh, and started at $10 an hour with a sore back and a broom. Fifteen years later he runs his own renovation business in North Carolina and is still on the tools most days.

He and Brad talk about the messy middle: wanting to grow without giving up quality, the free hours that every lead costs, and why he now looks for reasons to disqualify a project. Andrew also covers what success means to him, the gap between top-line revenue and cash flow, the products he swears by, and how he’d rebuild from scratch with $10K and a box of donuts.

In this 35-minute conversation, Brad and Andrew cover:

    • The messy middle: Still on the tools most days, keeping quality high, and working toward getting off the tools 50% of the time.
    • Disqualifying leads: Why every lead can cost 3–5 unpaid hours, and how a connection form on his website screens out projects that aren’t serious.
    • Top line vs. bottom line: Why cash flow matters more than the number you brag about at the bar.
    • The learning curve: Saved texts, QuickBooks estimates, and the push to finally commit to a CRM.
    • Starting over with $10K: Angie, Google Business Profile, a marketing partner, and a box of donuts on custom builders’ job sites to find subs.

    Key Quote from the Episode:
“For me, the work is the easy part. The business is the hard part.” — Andrew

  • He Started a Construction Company by Accident (Now He Runs a Crew of 6)

Logan never planned to start a construction company. A professor asked if he could hang drywall, then frame a window, then flip a whole house. Three years later, Oak and Stone is a six-man crew in Pennsylvania building decks, garages and pole barns, and it’s heading into full home builds.

In this 40-minute conversation, Brad and Logan cover:

    • The beginning: How one drywall job spiraled into a business before he’d finished his construction management degree
    • Building the crew: Why he hired an office manager before adding more guys in the field
    • The rain-delay problem: Keeping six guys paid without opening a job he can’t finish
    • “We,” not “I”: Running the business with the crew’s input instead of making every call alone
    • Removing bathrooms: Two callbacks, one hard lesson, and why sticking to what you know lowered his stress
    • Learning to say no: Turning down work and sending it to trusted guys down the street

    Key Quote from the Episode:
“If you can find somebody that can do the job 70% as well as you can, hire them. Because you can’t grow your business if you’re working in the business.” — Logan

In this episode of ContractorWorldLand, California contractor Ryder breaks down his first seven months running his own remodel and plumbing business, which went from day one to $224,000 in revenue.

In this 30-minute conversation, Brad and Ryder cover:

    • Never Twice: His uncle's rule for fixing what a customer points out right away, and why showing up consistently has kept contractors calling him back.
    • The Hiring Struggle: Finding helpers who stick around once the early mornings and physical work set in.

    Key Quote from the Episode:

"I was calling up people from three years ago... 'If you got overflow, man, I'm probably gonna be going out on my own. So give me a call.' And guess what happened? They called me." — Ryder

  • 30 Years on the Roof: Copper Masters Roofing & Kaldrea Construction, Mississippi

Kaleb has been on roofs for 30 years. It started with his dad taking him out on jobs at 7 or 8 to pick up paper wrappers, and by 16 he was running crews. In his early twenties he took out a loan and bought the sheet metal part of his dad's business, then built his name soldering copper when few people in his area were doing it.

Copper Masters Roofing grew out of that, and after the 2023 hail season it grew into full roofing, with a 4-5 person office behind it. Then the market flooded. He was bidding 390-480 a square while some PE-backed companies were in the 200s and low 300s, so he scaled back to himself, a project manager, and the same family crew he's worked with for about 18 years.

Kaleb talks about building a national following of about 10,000 by following roofers across the country and showing up at the expos, and about walking into bids with a baseline number and photos of the job.

He gets into what he'd do first with $10K if he had to start over (phones, bookkeeping, project management software, bulk material), why he tells new contractors not to commingle funds and to give every dollar a job, and why quality over quantity is the hill he'll die on.

Success for him now is being home for dinner.

  • The Real Cost of Staying Comfortable — Estimating, Delegation, and Getting Out of Your Own Way

We sat down with Jim Tocci from Candid to talk about the thing that quietly kills contractor growth: doing everything yourself because it worked when you had nothing. Jim's spent years outsourcing estimating for residential and commercial builders, and he breaks down why contractors backburner estimating specifically, why "comfort" is really just control in disguise, and how pricing jobs too low to win the next one traps guys in a cycle for years. We also get into the metrics-based estimating approach (why chasing every line item to the penny is a waste of time), Google Sheets vs. custom software, and his honest take on why every contractor needs a business coach — even when it doesn't feel like it makes sense.

  • Peace Over Hustle: How Finish Carpenter & Cabinetmaker Joseph Bowers Rebuilt His Contracting Business Around What He Actually Loves

Joseph Bowers didn't set out to build an empire — he set out to make sawdust. After a brutal first run at general contracting nearly cost him everything, Joseph walked away, took a job as a project manager at a high-end firm, and came back with a completely different definition of success.

Now running a solo fine finish, millwork, and cabinetry business out of the Boston/Lakes Region area, he's not chasing revenue — he's chasing peace.

In this episode, Joseph and Brad dig into why "happy" and "peaceful" aren't the same thing, how relationship-building (not marketing) actually wins builder and designer accounts, and why the way you make a client feel matters just as much as the quality of your miters.
