There is no reason why student leadership should be reserved high schoolers. Give them a taste of the leadership inside them if they are willing.

If you have them combined let the jr. high lead too in it

If you have separate have one in the jr. high ministry also

You want them to participate in things that will form them in powerful ways as their identities are being formed

Excellence in Jr. High Student Leadership Justin, Kurt, and some spiders

Give them opportunities to be involved

Don’t make your excellent definition so high they cannot participate

They will be wrong, but you need to affirm them in a positive way

The best way to learn leadership is to learn it in the trenches

They love to see their friends owning things

Ask other areas if they are open to serving in other areas besides children’s ministry and jr. high ministry

It gives them another caring adult in their life

 

Kenda Dean Student Leadership

If you want kids to be engaged as adults get them engaged as children

Give them a “load-bearing” role

Don’t hold on to tight to the reigns—never do ministry alone

With a team, you can share the authority

You need a diverse team in outlook and demographics (cause that what the kids are)

You must be a trustworthy colleague

Learn to pastor your bosses (teach the kids to care for those in authority)

Learn how to do youth ministry to grown-ups.

We are good at meeting kids where they are but not adults.

Discussion Questions:

Where are our students serving?

Are we allowing middle schoolers to serve as leaders?

Does each of us have someone to do youth ministry with?

Are we meeting our adults where they are as good as we reach our students?

You have to know whatever model you choose may be hurting feelings of students who are not involved.

Just like a camp. Decide where you want to go and tweak accordingly

High can be the best time to develop leaders.

Think

Discover our student’s talents and gifts—then develop it—and deploy them.

We don’t want to teach kids what to think but how to think.

We teach what we know but reproduce what we are—John Maxwell

If the IPhone is upgrading every 18 months why shouldn’t we think youth ministry is?

Help kids understand their wiring. Give personality tests.

Teach them more than the word. Teach how to live out life.

Always asses. You cannot correct what you cannot confront. Bring in someone from the outside to get an honest look and see your blind spots.

Dream

Once you teach them to think. Have them dream not only what they can do but what the ministry can do. What would you do if you knew you wouldn’t fail?

Have a youth council or leadership team and write the dreams.

You need kids who are not completely connected. The best way to reach outsiders is to know outsiders.

Vision Casting is key to get this set up.

Lead

This is a byproduct of thinking and dreaming. What happens is that they begin to become leaders that are head and shoulders above.

What about students living different outside of church?

Hold them accountable. Other students are watching you and you need to confront them. But do it with grace and respect.

Proximity Matters. Faith does not go up if they are closer but it does increase faith maturity—it skyrockets if they live with 50 miles.

Technology can replace proximity in a way. Video chatting is huge and do it to eat meals together.

Grandparents shaped issues of identity, belonging, and purpose rather than spiritual discipline

You develop properly being around experts and that applies to faith too

Faith modeling is HUGE

It will shape the maturity of the child.

Reading the Bible and serving constantly helped and led to better conversations

Send pictures, stories, and verses if you do not live close

The first “Post-Christian” generation

10% Boomers, 7% gen x, 6% millennials, 4% gen z have a Biblical Worldview (Barna)

Oldest Gen Z is just heading into college. 2x likely as adults to identity as atheist. 34% are “nones”. 58% agree there is no one true religion

“How I feel” and “what is true for me “is their default response—they are Christian relativists

Change from feeling questions to thinking questions

Find a way to disrupt them.

Use provocative questions

Get Christianity back into the realm of reality

We need to have as sophisticated conversations in church as they are having online. There is age appropriate ways to handle these conversations.

We want to help walk them to good answers.

We cant just say nothing or they may “outgrow” their faith

Discussion Questions:

If you could teach any topic what would it be?

How are we utilizing the grandparents in our church?

Are we using “feeling” questions or “thinking” questions for our group questions?

How do we make our environments to make students feel welcome?

How are we disrupting their rhythm?

Are we having sophisticated conversations with our students?

Why mic skills are essential with Justin and Kurt

If the audio is terrible everything is terrible no matter how good the video/graphics

If the person is ill-prepared no matter how much planning it will drain the energy of the room

Consider using a handheld—the audio quality is much better and you can use to your advantage with its distance

Students will see a potential future for themselves in the person on the microphone

Never give the mic away if you don’t know what they will say.

If you don’t know whether to use a mic or not—use a mic

You have to train people on how to be on a mic—it is not a natural thing

This is stuff you can give to your leaders.

It is not long and drawn out (only 1 hr)

It will be encouraging and give you a different way of thinking about things

Look at them and imagine where they will be in a few years

What do we need to be thinking about?

Identify gifts in those years and put them on that track to develop it

Think ahead but do not get ahead of themselves

Give them opportunities to leverage it

Sometimes the disruptive kid is the leader. Talk to them about it

See if there is an upperclassman that they could be and have them hang around them.

Call out to them what you see in them

Engage the parents in any way that you can. Some kids might not show themselves, and parents can be a great insight.

With leaders moving up or not always remember where you are trying to get the students.

Never forget what it is like to be a teenager

Never do youth ministry alone

How to make the game time the best it can be—Justin and Kurt (04:37)

Design it around the person with the least amount of skill in the room.

Don’t do it by gender.

Don’t try and force the game into your theme.

Don’t force the kids to participate if they don’t want to play.

Fun isn’t always games—it can be a skit or a bit on stage.

Payoff must be equal or greater than the setup.

Be clear and fair. Jr. Higher’s are justice oriented.

Once in a while figure out how to involve specials needs students

Do fun games but don’t make it the focus.

Don’t apologize for doing games. They build trust and learn teamwork.

Find a need and show it to them (make them a Facebook page and give it to them, send them a logo if it is low resolution, offer to work for free)

Create a project that shows your skills in a tangible way

Know the name of Jr. High Students, leaders, and parents.

Every Monday, pick five students and send them a letter.

Try to interact with Jr. high students five senses when teaching the Bible

Embrace their digital world

Go out and evangelize with your students. They need to see it lived out.

The feedback of students is vital.

The only thing they need from you is a heart that has been with Jesus.

 

Discussion Questions:

How are we strategically using our game time? What should we start doing, stop doing, and keep doing?

Have you/we reached out to someone outside the church for a meeting? If so did you/we honor them or leave a bad taste about you or our organization? How can you/we improve?

What is your unique intersection of skills and abilities?

Do we know all of our volunteer’s names? Do they know their kid’s names?

What have we learned from our students? When was the last time we asked them (if ever)?
