What has your heart? What has your focus? What has your obedience? In Matthew 6:16–21, Jesus confronts the temptation to make spiritual practices all about being seen by others. He calls us away from performance and toward a life of surrender. Fasting exposes what we depend on, redirects our attention, and creates space for us to seek God. It reminds us that our physical hunger points to a deeper spiritual hunger, and that only Jesus can truly satisfy it.

It wasn’t just my sin that Jesus took to the Cross, and it wasn’t just my debt that He paid. Jesus calls us to forgive everyone who trespasses against us - even when the hurt is deep and the debt feels impossible to release. We cannot do that in our own strength. But when we look to the Cross, we discover that Jesus died for the sins committed against us too. It is at the Cross that we find both the forgiveness we desperately need and the power to forgive others.

The Lord’s Prayer sits at the exact epicenter of the Sermon on the Mount. If the prayer is, as Tertullian says, a summary of the Gospel, then the entire sermon encompasses the Gospel of Christ and reveals our complete and utter need for a savior, and so we cry out “our Father.” 

In Matthew 6:1–4, Jesus exposes a subtle danger: we can do the right things with the wrong motives. Our generosity, service, prayer, and obedience can become a performance when we begin living for the approval, recognition, and applause of people.

But Jesus invites us into a different way of living, not for approval, but from the identity we have already received in Him. We don't need the crowd's applause because we already have the Father's attention.
