Why do the innocent suffer?

For millennia people have tried to explain why bad things happen to good people. When we suffer, we tend to think that it is a consequence of our sin, and that the suffering we are experiencing is actually God’s displeasure with us. What if we knew that in our suffering, God had a plan? Would that change how we experienced trials? Would it change how we viewed God?
