  • 24. Is God Good?

The question of whether or not God is good came up recently in a debate on Twitter with Vin Armani and I, and it made me reevaluate my position on this. I was striving to reconcile the idea when a quote in Confessions by St. Augustine helped shed light on the idea.

But then I would ask myself once more: 'Who made me? Surely it was my God, who is not only good but Goodness itself. How, then, do I come to possess a will that can choose to do wrong and refuse to do good, thereby providing a just reason why I should be punished? Who put this will into me? Who sowed this seed of bitterness in me, when all that I am was made by my God, who is Sweetness itself? If it was the devil who put it there, who made the devil? If he was a good angel who became a devil because of his own wicked will, how did he come to possess the wicked will which made him a devil, when the Creator, who is entirely good, made him a good angel and nothing else?'
    St. Augustine

  • 23. Artificial Intelligence and Human Consciousness
Those who know the Self become the Self. None in their family forgets the Self. Freed from the fetters of separateness, they attain to immortality.
Let this wisdom be taught only to those who obey life's unity. Let this wisdom be taught only to those who offer their lives to the Lord of Love.
    Mundaka Upanishad

Watching the season 1 finale of Westworld, I realized that this dilemma was coming. I don't know the technology behind it, nor can I predict the way we will legislate it. What I am going to try today is to begin to understand humanity in a spiritual way, but also juxtaposing it to machine learning. The question is what makes us human? Can we artificially create humans? What would be the tipping point from machine to human?

This issue is as much about understanding our nature and our consciousness as it is understanding what we create.

  • 22. Confessions of St. Augustine and How They Apply Today
God is dead. God remains dead. And we have killed him. Yet his shadow still looms. How shall we comfort ourselves, the murderers of all murderers? What was holiest and mightiest of all that the world has yet owned has bled to death under our knives; who will wipe this blood off us? What water is there for us to clean ourselves?
    -Friedrich Nietzsche

In reading St. Augustine's Confessions, I was struck by the story of Faustus and the beginning of Augustine's conversion to Christianity. I think I see this at large in American society today, and want to explain that.

Also, we will discuss what a cosmogony is and why we must reestablish one in our society today.

  • 21. Lessons Millennials Can Learn From The Jungle Book
If you can keep your wits about you while all others are losing theirs, and blaming you. The world will be yours and everything in it, what's more, you'll be a man, my son.
    -Rudyard Kipling

The jungle book it is a beautiful way to illustrate the cultivation of manhood in a young boy. These are a few lessons that reveal themselves to me more explicitly as I watched one of my favorite movies growing up now as an adult. Before I dive into the lessons, it's important to note that the premise of this story is that forces are driving Mowgli toward the village, which represents civilization, and others are pulling him back. The argument being made, in my opinion, is that his journey toward civilization is good.

Lesson 1: the truth can be deceiving

Lesson 2: don't get distracted by hedonism

Lesson 3: tools and the intellect are a gift to mankind

Lesson 4: women are the best way to point a man toward civilization

  • 20. 4th of July Special, a look at Our Founding Documents

The Declaration of Independence and Constitution are two of the most important documents in the history of governance, especially in the United States. On the 4th of July, we celebrate the day we declared ourselves a free nation. The look into both of these documents is due to the fact that the Declaration of Independence was a vision statement for our country. The Constitution was the way that we would execute that vision.

Today, I talk about them both because I think it is important to keep the vision at the top of mind this week as we remember this incredible idea and event in human history.

    Quote of the Week:
Timid men prefer the calm of despotism to the tempestuous sea of liberty.
    -Thomas Jefferson

  • Bonus Episode 2: Dan Johnson of We Do Better

Today, I am honored to welcome Dan Johnson of We Do Better to talk to me about how to help charities and organizations that provide better solutions to meeting human needs. His organization focuses on enacting charitable tax credits modeled after the Arizona Charitable Tax Credit so people can put their money into charities that are doing better than government at providing for human needs.

I have recently gotten involved in this organization in the action arm to pass one of these credits in Indianapolis to count against property taxes on an annual basis. I will be documenting my journey somewhat, or at least keeping you in the loop as I go through this.
