"Great Minds Discuss Ideas; Average Minds Discuss Events; Small Minds Discuss People."

This quote is often attributed to Eleanor Roosevelt, but its origins are unclear. The truth in it is indisputable, however. As we look around us, it is apparent that the small minds talk about people, while great minds talk about ideas. This doesn't mean that those who discuss ideas are always right or that those who discuss people are always wrong in their assessment- rather it is noble to endeavor and wish to understand ideas. We look to cultural figures and what is going on around them as they attempt to talk about ideas instead of people.

With last week's travesty in the U.K. over Alfie, I wanted to discuss the idea of the collective and the collective good. In this, I will argue that there are no government actions that are good for the collective and that this mindset is dangerous for any society.

I will demonstrate that the collective good is nothing more than pandering to the majority at the expense of the minority in order to maintain power and approval.
