Thomas Kuhn, in his highly influential book, The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, introduced the world to the concept of paradigms and how they change. A paradigm is a framework for understanding and cataloging worldly events, the ground rules for explaining things; at some point, however, the existing paradigm no longer accounts for worldly events and must be replaced by one that does. By all indications, that is where we are heading: the current scientific paradigm, based on materialism and the notion that everything can be explained by particles in motion, is showing signs of decay. One of the leading writers calling for a paradigm shift is this week’s s guest, Manjir Samanta-Laughton, the author of the radical and thought-provoking book, Punk Science.
