This episode is Part 1 of a series of 4 episodes where I will be talking to Professor Ludmila Stern about her ARC Linkage project.
In Australia and internationally, a growing demand for courtroom interpreting presents significant challenges. In today’s episode Prof Ludmila Stern talks to us about her ARC (Australian Research Council) Linkage project: Access to justice in interpreted proceedings: The role of Judicial Officers.
This project aims to examine the ways judicial officers can improve courtroom communication and prevent miscommunication and error, particularly in criminal cases where speakers of the 'new and emerging' and Aboriginal languages are involved, and where interpreters receive limited or no specialised training.

COVID-19 has impacted the way language services are delivered in almost all settings including hospitals and health institutions. More and more interpreting services are shifting to Remote Interpreting i.e. telephone, video.
In today’s episode, I spoke with Emiliano Zucchi, Director Transcultural & Language Services about the short and long-term effects this has on the patients, healthcare staff, interpreters and the broader T&I industry

For established languages (such as Greek, Italian, Turkish, etc.) clients with limited linguistic mastery are under the wrong impression that they don't require interpreting services as they can get by. A lot of the clinicians are under the same mistaken impression (as long as someone can tell them their name, nods, says 'Yes' and 'Thank you') and this creates obstacles in the provision of language services. You will never know the difference between getting by and using the services of an appropriately qualified and competent professional interpreter, which is of course, up until you use such services as you should. Now and with the added complexity of a pandemic, there is a tendency for interlingual communication to be reduced to a bare minimum due to both necessity and convenience. However, this very misinformed attitude has far reaching ramifications to the complete, accurate and effective communication and is a concern for all stakeholders in the industry.

In January 2018, NAATI introduced a new certification system for translators and interpreters, which became the industry standard for working in the profession. We spoke about why the certification system was implemented and its importance for the professionalisation of the T and I industry as well as some important COVID-19 updates for re-certification and testing.
