One of a coach’s most important jobs is a simple one - ask questions. Those questions can be simple or complex (usually simple), but they often must be insistent. Questions like this can feel challenging to the ones being asked. There’s a feeling of being “judged” at times. This is where the skills of an excellent coach can truly shine. How do you apply just the right pressure with your questions without tipping someone over into feeling judged?

One thing that uniquely positions a coach to be of great service to their clients is an unexpected combination of characteristics that make them what I sometimes call The Familiar Stranger. Though close relationships - friends and family - may know you incredibly well, it is often difficult to open up in the ways you need most to someone so near and dear to you. What a coach can provide is the empathy and connection of a loved one with the distance and safety of someone you barely know…not to mention the lack of “baggage” that might come with the history of a longstanding relationship. :)

Bradley has been an entrepreneur since 2009 and began his first business with the belief that his sales abilities would be enough to grow and scale. He quickly learned that being the rainmaker wasn't enough. After a health scare, he began "architecting" his business to work for him. Now, he teaches other owners to do the same.
We left so much meat on the bone in our first conversation, we're certain to have a part two in the not-too-distant future. Today Bradley talks about the beginnings of his coaching business, the importance of "fit" when not only choosing a coach but also deciding on a program, and his Blueprint core offering.

Most coaches I’ve met have two things very much in common: they discovered in themselves a desire to serve others, and they realized that they had something very specific and unique to contribute. But there’s something else very similar to this that is often true, especially with the best coaches - they’ve found an area of great need, and have chosen to dedicate themselves to it.

When seeking growth, it’s easy to think purely of addition - what needs to be added, what needs to get bigger, what needs to be more. But it’s just as often what you remove or refrain from - words left unsaid, roads left untaken - that lead you to your next level.

Always a sucker for a good analogy, I’ve been thinking a lot recently about how good coaching serves two seemingly-paradoxical purposes. Grounding and Guidance. Foundation and Direction.
