Today I want to express to you why the ancient pattern for the Assemblies of Christ is so very important. In our assembly here we are holding to the ancient pattern – the teachings of the Lord’s Apostles.

This is what nearly all churches say about themselves, but the proof is in the teachings of the leadership. This does not mean that we do not use modern technology to teach the Bible! A good example of what I’m talking about is found in the Letter to the Church in Philipi.

James – The Final Exhortations, James 5: 1-20 Neal Woodbury

The condition of the Jewish people and their way of life is clearly a burden to James and he is giving them a picture of things about to be.

I. What has Israel done

a. Read James 5: 1-6

b. The last days were upon them

II. The Presence of the Lord is at hand

a. Read James 5: 7-9

b. Be patient, the Lord’s presence draws nigh…

III. Hope in Christ, the Messiah of God

a. Read James 5: 10-20

b. Examples of Patience; Verses 10-12

c. Suffering of the Assembly; Verses 13-16

d. Examples of the Prophet Elijah; Verses 17-20

These are not random thoughts to consider!

James – Christian Conduct Examined #2

James the Elder in the Jerusalem assembly speaks now to the Christian concerning their conduct – to put away the lusts and ways of those outside of Christ.

I. You ask and have not – Why?

a. Read James 4: 1-4

b. Be not friend to the ways of men because they have departed the ways of God.

II. Be subject to God – Stand firm

a. Read James 4: 5-10

b. Draw close to God – and He will draw close to you!

III. Speak not against one another…

Last week we let off in studies in James at James 2: 20 – we’ll pick up there today, then go onto James 3: 1-18 – but will not complete it today!

I. Not out of Faith only!

a. Read James 2: 20-26

b. Not just a mental action, but a heartfelt response and action on our part; remember that The Faith apart from works is dead. Devoid of life.

c. Read V. 26 again; Do not go beyond what is written, but

never do less!

II. Greater Judgment on Christian Teachers

a. Read James 3: 1-2

b. This judgment from God was known by the people of Israel – and now the assemblies of Christ also will be instructed to teach well the things of God.

III. The tongue is a Fire!

a. Read James 3: 3-12en.

This second chapter of James is a teaching about how a Christian should make “Judgments”. The warning is to not judge without mercy and love as the Jewish Pharisees were prone to doing, but rather as the Lord shall judge them.

I. Judge according to “The Faith

a. Read James 2: 1-4

b. Fairness is loving and reasonable

II. Be careful not to “miss the mark”

a. Read James 2: 5-13

b. Do not judge in light of prejudice or partiality.

III. This in proper Judgment is the way of unbelievers.

a. Judgment to the letter of the Law – what Law?

b. The Royal Law is fulfilled in the New Commandment of Jesus
