Growing and sharing Spiritual Capital starts with hearing God speak. But it also means taking what we have heard and putting it into practice. And part of putting it into practice means learning from others. One of the ways we talk about learning from others is a process known as discipleship. Dallas Willard describes discipleship as “the process of becoming who Jesus would be if He were you.” That’s why this week we moved our conversation on Spiritual Capital from hearing the Words of Jesus to practicing the Ways of Jesus. Practicing the ways of Jesus means more than just gaining more information about Jesus. Instead it means combining information with a pathway of imitation and innovation. By beginning to cultivate an atmosphere of faith, hope and love we start discipleship where we are at and not where we want to be. The same goes when we start to disciple others. In imitating others, we learn the ways of Jesus by seeing these ways in the lives of those we learn from. But while imitation is a worthwhile pathway it is never our goal. It is through imitation that we learn to innovate and by innovating we become not the generic version of someone else but our true selves. That’s why we must give ourselves not simply to teaching but also to training and tactics. This week Dave challenged our ordinary view of what it means to think about church by asking us to be the church, not simply go to church—by being a disciple and discipling others.

This past week David Zimmerman helped us train in hearing the voice of God by continuing to lead us through I Samuel 3. We took inventory of our expectations in hearing God’s voice. We expanded our listening skills and potential opportunities to hear God’s voice together. We participated in hearing God’s voice in Scripture and we engaged in conversation around our past experiences and future hopes. Because hearing God’s voice and acting on it is the way we build our spiritual capital, having a safe place to practice is incredibly important for our growth. So this week, we wanted to continue to practice together and debrief our practice from last week.

This week David Walker addresses how the practice of spiritual disciplines can help us grow our spiritual capital. By looking at the life of Samuel in I Samuel 3, David creatively engaged us in conversation about making space in our lives for God to speak. Regular rhythms set aside to help us hear from God through His word (the Bible), through the practice of prayer, silence, worship, nature and a myriad of other disciplines are and have been a regular practice for many people who live wisdom and power. Jesus lived his life in these constant rhythms as well. So this week we want to process together what regular rhythms of spiritual disciplines might look like in our lives as well.

This week we continued the journey of growing our Spiritual Capital by introducing two tools to help us learn to listen to God and act on what we hear. The two tools were the Covenant and Kingdom Triangles (C+K) and the Circle. The C+K Triangles help us understand how wisdom and power stem from our relationship with God as Father and King. By working from our identity, instead of for our identity, we can live with power based on who God is and who we are as his sons and daughters, instead of just trying to gain power by getting to a certain position or job title. The Circle helps us notice how the kingdom of God is breaking into our lives and teaches us how to notice these “kairos” events, hear God and act on what He is saying. Combined together, the two tools help us to hear God and grow in our identity and from there act with authority and power.

What separates followers of God from people who choose not to follow Him?

Throughout history many people have tried to answer this question. And often the answers you hear to this question, to be honest, are less than helpful. For too long the distinction of followers of God has been built simply by what we don’t do. So following God means not doing this or staying away from that. But what if following God was meant to be more than a BIG NO in our lives? What if the best marker of God-followers was not just simply a few differences of behavior modification but a whole new way of living that was both more powerful and more productive?

Spiritual Capital is the most important of the 5 Capitals because it empowers us into this way of life. By hearing and seeing God and placing what we hear and see into practice, we grow in wisdom and power. And learning to trade in wisdom and power in a world that simply trades in knowledge and skill may be the best way for the world to see that our lives are filled with the supernatural. So join us for this extraordinary journey into a better way of life as we invest in growing our Spiritual Capital and become people who are naturally demonstrating the supernatural with our lives.
