  • 191 Childhood Trauma – Recovery & Mastery – Brown
    Childhood Trauma: Tools For Mastery and Recovery
    Vernon Brown – Reports that when considering childhood trauma: “everyone is looking for the magic key that will unlock their happiness, not realizing that we’ve evaded that key all of our lives. We take it for granted, getting caught up in the minutia of life, failing to stop and smell the roses and appreciate the things that are important to us. I believe your experience truly begins when you make happiness a tangible commodity that is non-negotiable.
    Why is your happi vital to me? – Because happiness evaded me most of my young life based upon my own childhood trauma. It wasn’t until I reached adulthood that I understood the value of joy, which is somewhat a backward experience. Many people experience the wonders during a childhood of imagination and innocence – and then find that they to lose it as they grow older. Not me. Childhood wonder and innocence was foreign to me from the outset.”
    In this Episode Vernon articulately tell us how he overcame childhood trauma, found internal happiness and uses that discovery process to help others.
    Vernon’s Childhood Trauma Reviewed
    “Before the age of 10, I’d experienced varying degrees of death, overdose, and abuse in my environment of repeated childhood trauma. I knew my mother loved me but she did not make smart decisions to benefit her family; she was more wrapped up in pursuing what she wanted instead of what we needed. As a result, we moved around a lot. My mother’s lifestyle alienated relationships with family and close friends, forcing us to exist in a silo, isolated from everyone else.
    It didn’t help that I was an awkward kid, overweight and just out of place. My family circumstances caused people to look down on me. The result? I felt less than, broken and invisible.
    One pinnacle moment stands out in my memory as a young boy. As the school bus pulled in front of my house to let me off, I noticed all my things from room lying in the street in front of my home. We’d been evicted and now everyone knew it. Everyone laughed at me, and I wanted to disappear. I could not understand what I could have done to deserve this life. I hated myself, not my mom – I hated me.
    Recovery Perspective – Parenting Matters
    When you shatter a vase on the floor, it takes time to pick up the pieces and put it together. And, once it is put together, it’s never the same; it’s now more fragile than it was, to begin with. I was that shattered vase. My grandmother was the glue that helped me begin to put pieces together when I moved in with her. She showed me how to be a child, something I’d never really known.
    My childhood trauma experiences taught me how to observe people, mostly as a defense mechanism to protect myself. My awkward stage extended into adulthood. I did not grow into the person I am today until I turned 20. At that point, I learned that being happy is not something life gives you; you have to seize it for yourself and manage it.
    Lessons From Pain
    That’s one of the biggest challenges people face today; some allow others to hold the puppet strings on what makes them happy. I share my story with you because I want you to know that no matter your circumstances, you have the power to claim happiness for yourself. My life experience has not only helped me learn the value of happiness for myself, but it has awakened a passion in me to help others claim that freedom for themselves. I work with everyone I encounter to experience a revision, perception correction regarding their view of themselves.
    Action Matters
    I help others move out of crisis mode and more objectively reassess themselv...

  • 188 The Neurobiology of Food Addiction – Leppo
    Food Addiction – The Neurobiology of Food
    A lot of people are afraid of heights. Not me, I’m afraid of widths.
    ~ Steven Wright
    Micheal Leppo is a food addiction coach on a mission to address diet, weight loss, and self-management through understanding the neurobiology of food, called the You Will Succeed Program. His program is a 22-week video program that explains, provides coaching, and mentors client’s regarding how to achieve health and life benefits whilst managing food intake.
    Please note that this program is more than just a weight loss program. It’s a program that is designed to help one live a longer, healthier, more successful life.
    Personal Notes On Michael
    “I am a passionate coach who has studied how food (notably processed GMO’s, sugar-laden and high carb foods) controls your brain. These fatty foods excite the reward circuit in the brain which in turn release the neurochemical dopamine.
    Food directly connects with neurobiology.
    This release of dopamine provides one with a feeling of pleasure on several levels. Eventually, the continued overeating of these types of food desensitizes the feeling of pleasure the dopamine originally provides, which in turn explains in part why one has to eat more and more to regain the feeling of pleasure.  These dopaminergic challenges provide an understanding of why someone cannot eat ‘only one cookie.’”
    His Recovery Process
    “What I set out to do and have achieved is to re-wire the brain to crave only healthy foods. Now, my brain is 99.999% re-wired only to want foods that help my body/engine run at optimal levels.”
    The direct result of re-wiring his own brain includes:
    * A loss of over 70 pounds in 7 months
    * Feeling like I have found the Fountain of Youth. I feel younger, stronger, healthier.
    * I no longer have any interest in processed, high sugar and carb foods.
    * I now crave and get excited to have a delicious piece of fruit or salad.
    * Mentally, I feel like you can put any dessert in front of me and it makes no difference to my resolve.
    * Mentally, I am so much stronger facing any type of adversity.
    * I now look forward to exercising & cannot imagine not doing something for my body & mind every day.
    * I wake up every day feeling like anything is possible.
    * I feel like I can achieve goals I never thought were possible.

  • 184 Synesthesia, Perceptions & Mind – Brogaard
    Synesthesia And The Mind
    The world is full of magic things, patiently waiting for our senses to grow sharper.
    ~ W. B. Yeats
    Dr. Berit Oskar Brogaard – is a Danish and American philosopher specializing in the areas of cognitive neuroscience, philosophy of mind, and philosophy of language. Her recent work concerns synesthesia, savant syndrome, blindsight and perceptual reports. She is Professor of Philosophy and runs a perception lab at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida.[1][2]
    After co-authoring The Superhuman Mind, which is about how ordinary individuals can change their minds and brains, she continued looking at how we can bring about positive changes not just in the area of extraordinary abilities but also to mood, personality and the meaning of life. Brit has a different take on improved connections with the concept of synesthesia to improve mindset from direct experience with challenging life travels.
    Ed Note: Synesthesia is a favorite concept I’ve referenced over the years and Brit takes it’s application to a much deeper level.
    Brief Introduction
    The limits of my language means the limits of my world.
    ~ Ludwig Wittgenstien
    Brogaard was born and raised in Copenhagen. From an early age, she excelled at physics, mathematics, and biology, eventually completing her undergraduate education at the University of Copenhagen with a bachelor’s degree in linguistics and philosophy.
    Upon completion of her degrees in Copenhagen she studied linguistics and philosophy at the University at Buffalo, where she obtained her Ph.D. with Barry Smith as her supervisor. She was a postdoctoral fellow at the Centre for Consciousness and the Philosophy Program directed by David Chalmers at Australian National University from 2007 to 2009,[4] and her first tenure-track position was at Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville, from 2001 to 2005.

    She’s considered by many “The Mother of Probiotics.” Her considerable accomplishments that appear in her show notes here confirm this accolade.
    Brief Introduction
    Following her graduation from UCLA in 1970, a decade of research led to Natasha’s development of the first revolutionary method of producing an effective and scientifically validated single strain probiotic bacteria product. Her efforts led to the establishment of the entire probiotics category in North America, Australia, England, Holland, and Belgium.
    Her interesting views on probiotic specificity are, in a word, remarkable.
    Significant Contributions
    Some of Natasha Trenev’s accomplishments include:
    * Introduced the previously unknown category of probiotics to the North American health food industry and dietary supplement industry;
    * Authored the Dairy Standards for liquid yogurt adopted by the California Department of Agriculture in 1969;
    * Established perishable sections in the health food stores across the nation from 1970-73 to sell yogurt;
    * Assisted in establishing perishable distributors nationwide to sell yogurt;
    * Worked with the Vice President of United Airlines to establish user-friendly rates to ship perishables cross country by air in 1971;

    Natasha’s Experience In Setting Probiotic Standards
    In 1980, I made arrangements with a research facility that gave me access to a laboratory, where I began culturing my own probiotic supplements. I processed cultures, supervised the freeze-drying and powdering processes, and even helped with the bottling. Everything was billed and shipped from my home. My husband trucked in dry ice every day to keep the live bacteria supplements from deteriorating in the garage, where we were forced to keep them stored.
    For many years, I found myself continually frustrated by the lack of established standards for probiotics. Probiotics of the finest quality competed in the marketplace with probiotic products of...
