  • 071 Alzheimer’s Dietary Guidelines – Healey
    Alzheimer’s Dietary Guidelines Matter
Brain research is rapidly emerging and I know that Eat to Beat Alzheimer’s is going to be a great start for a lot of people, because our collective understanding about brain health and overall health as it relates to nutrition, is constantly evolving.
    ~ Francie Healey
Francie Healey Reports: Alzheimer’s & Dietary Interventions
First a fresh perspective: Francie is a health and wellness counselor, who combines her expertise in nutrition and mental health. Her public speaking topics include: brain health and diet, eating well on a budget, self-care and self-worth, infant and child nutrition, and the connection between food and mood.
    Francie’s Book and Mission
Francie’s first book, Eat to Beat Alzheimer’s, is a manual for health and cooking. It provides nutritional science and education to help readers become well-informed on the connection between the food they eat and how it affects their brain health now and in future years. Tune in as Francie address hard facts necessary to deal with any signs of cognitive impairment at any age. Recovery challenges create walls to making progress that requires distinct, different activity patterns, both physically and mentally.
    Mind Details Always Matter
Above all Eat to Beat Alzheimer’s offers a practical guide and an empowering tool to bring nourishing, healthful, and delicious food into the lives of people concerned about Alzheimer’s and other cognitive problems. Almost 9 million people in the U.S. suffer from Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, and the toll is rapidly increasing. Francie’s book will appeal to everyone concerned about dementia and memory loss at any level in either themselves or a loved one.
A certified diagnosis of Alzheimer’s begins with subtle dementia and minimal cognitive impairment [MCI] on several levels. It’s time to look more carefully at prevention and contributory factors that deteriorate brain function.
Recent research makes clear that the impact of simple diet and lifestyle diminish modifications of aging on the brain. The delicious food choices and easy-to-prepare recipes in this book arise from these latest nutritional findings, showing that they can help slow the progression of Alzheimer’s and other similar conditions or prevent them entirely.

  • 070 Disability Recovery – Tscherne & Love
    Disability Recovery Needs A Plan
Except me as I am and I will learn what I can become.
    ~ John Tscherne
It’s not what happens to you, but how you react to it that matters.
    ~ Epictetus
Dr. Richard Tscherne Reports: Disability Recovery With Partner Jaimie Love Adams
In this report Dr. Tscherne discusses his disability recovery in helpful detail. It’s important to note that Dr. Tscherne is licensed clinical psychologist and a certified rehabilitation counselor with over 20 years experience in the field of disabilities. In addition to cerebral palsy, he’s overcome many obstacles. Because of his own personal journey, he strives to empower others with disabilities. He does this by changing their attitudes about themselves. Also, you will discover that Dr. Richard Tscherne now also serves as a Shriner clown and entertains children with orthopedic disabilities and burn injuries at the Shriner Hospitals in Boston and Philadelphia. His memoir, The Little Engine That Did It, reflects how his disability empowered him to achieve his goals in life.
Always remember, recovery challenges create walls to making progress that requires specific, different activity patterns, both physically and mentally.
Dr. Tscherne’s Mission – Disability Recovery Over the Wall
“As a result of my personal challenges with cerebral palsy, my Little Engine book is a metaphor for my own recovery journey. In a way, every one of us is on a journey that leads us into a labyrinth of new realities. The roads we travel on are not always straight; they have curves, bumps, and cracks, and travel is not easy. Even so, we continue on that road, trusting that it will lead us to someplace that answers the questions we hold. Once we get there, we understand why the path was not straight. The detours that we took were our greatest learning lessons.”
    My Journey
“To start with, my recovery journey is one of understanding and growing self-love. Once I started to appreciate who I was, my life began to change. Above all, I stopped pushing against my brick wall, which was, in my case, being born with cerebral palsy and fighting it for as long as I can remember. In the end, accepting that I have cerebral palsy has enabled my life to evolve; I became humble and empowered and began to understand love.”
    Your Journey
“What is your recovery journey? Has it been a straight road or a meandering one? Reflect on that for a moment. See your truth as you read through the pages of this book, and find your “aha” moment to lead you to your own empowerment.”

  • 069 How I Found Myself Dean Roberts
    How I Found Myself
I just finished  writing a book about my journey from being expelled from school at age 16, to creating a multi million dollar manufacturing business 25 yrs later. In my book I cover that challenging journey, that explanation of how I found myself, in an effort to connect with others.
    ~ Dean Roberts
It is not death that a man should fear, but he should fear never beginning to live.
    ~ Marcus Aurelius
Dean Roberts Reports: Deep Self Discovery On The Street
At the outset, Dean tells us about his personal journey from adolescent pain to self-discovery, through his application of classical principles to improve his self-management and build his successful accomplishments in business.
Notably, Dean credits the beginning of his enlightenment to the Stoic philosophers and translates their insights into street applications. More specifically he attributes his most significant improvements on the insights in Meditations, by Marcus Aurelius.
As a result, he used classic philosophic insights to reframe his perceptions of the world, became less entitled and, as you will see when you listen in, more balanced in his approach to people, business, and his personal life.
On The Found Process: A Book Review
“A man’s life cannot be justly written or adequately shared, not because language falls short – rather because a man’s life is a subjective experience.
On further consideration, two identical situations can cause excitement in one or fear in another based on the accumulation of each of their perspectives and past influences.
At best, polaroid and captions afford us flickering glimpses into a heart and soul. I’ll Fix My Head Before I’m Dead takes the reader by the hand and guides him through the nostalgic meandering of his personal memories. With wistful overtones and a stream of consciousness uninterrupted by punctuation, one cannot help but fall into rhythm with Roberts’ thoughts as he reflects on a life lived to its fullest. With this in mind, Roberts offers an open invitation to relive some of his most vulnerable moments and caps each story with a lesson he gleaned from the adversity.”

    Without Self-Confidence Progress Is Complicated
Before becoming a self-confidence coach I didn’t know how to get outside of myself and really get to know others. I was so caught up in Me that I never really connected with others. After my “opening” everything is now so much easier. My whole world is about getting to know others and being of service to them. Now when I’m nervous I go into service.
    ~ Brad Finkeldei
Brad Finkeldei Helps Us Open To Different Realities
And as with most activities in life, indeed with everyone we interview here at CBJ, we discourage reductionistic, simplistic and polemic thinking. Because as you already know, here at CBJ depression is more than depression, anxiety is far more than anxiety. In this interview, we discuss the variables troubles with diminished self-confidence. Very few of us have absolutely no self-confidence, but when a higher percentage of your cognitive and emotional disarray directly hits your self-confidence, motivation dies on the vine.
Self Confidence Targets: Both Biology & Psychology
The outcome of these self-confidence challenges can at first naturally present as self-questioning.  Naturally, self-reflection is a reasonable response to any developmental struggle, to any next steps. However, if stuck or arrested in the passage of time, with hesitancy to move forward over days, often creates real compromises in life.  Yes, developmental arrest, as you listeners well know, can arise from biological imbalances, and with new mind-measurement tools, we can target specific change details to build precise improvements – to correct that biologic foundation. In this CBJ/068 Episode, Brad addresses motivational, self-confidence arrest based on the psychology of limited thinking and feeling.
    Changing Reality Is Opportunity
Consequently, each new reality in life does create opportunities for a reset, a mind reset – a Mindset change to take stock and move forward with confidence. Brad notes that resetting on service to others encourages self-confidence.
Brad’s Personal View – From Me To You
“My Mindset change helped create the opportunity to write my best-selling book, and speak internationally. In this Episode, I’ll tell you how I even chased down a thief and then after understanding his world I gave him some money. It sounds weird, but interpersonal connections matter in the grand scheme of changing your perceptions to improve your own self-worth.”

    Brain Healing With Body Recovery
One evocative patient experience involved a 50 year old woman with malignant hypertension referred by her concerned physician. Working conjointly with the physician and patient, I helped her radically reduce her overweight, reduce tension by coping adaptively with her dysfunctional family, begin an exercise regimen, and enter a new, more satisfying, less-stressful career path.

Dr. McCusker’s Body Recovery Insights – Started As A Dropout
“I grew up in working-class Southwest Philadelphia. From about 13 to 17, I “hung out” at an approximately 60% African American housing project where I and other white and black kids played sports together. One of the high schools that I attended was about 95% white and the other, about 50% white and 50% black.
Like many from my neighborhood, I quit high school to join the military. Yes, I was a dropout.”

“In the Marines, en route to South Viet Nam, I turned eighteen. After Viet Nam, among other things, I was Corporal of the Guard at guided missile facilities in Brunswick, Maine, and Rota, Spain. While in the service, I finally passed a GED exam. After discharge, I earned bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in psychology.
As a licensed psychologist for forty years, I now work on many levels with children, adolescents, and adults in private settings, schools, hospitals, and outpatient clinics, and I have taught multiple psychology courses.”

Emergency Department crowding is exacerbated by the increase in the number of patients with mental disorders, substance abuse problems or both, who present with acute problems. Psychiatric Emergency Challenges Arise Everyday
Isaac Abraham, MSN, RN, is a Senior Compass Clinical Consultant specializes in the treatment of behavioral health patients in hospital Emergency Departments [EDs or Emergency Rooms – ERs].
His psychiatric emergency edge: he teaches hospital ER personnel how to improve mental health challenges during some of their most difficult moments in a psychiatric emergency. His experience in ED/ERs reports for listeners a variety of consistent issues that affect direct patient care and throughput. While the balance of these matters varies in different hospitals and localities, they are relatively consistent problems – and Issac puts hard answers right under the ER lights.
In addition to the psychiatric emergency itself – managing the psychiatric clinical presentation, basic triage, becomes quickly complicated for medical facilities. The pervasive problem: boarding unpredictable and challenging individuals with psychiatric disorders in the midst of serious ED medical emergencies.
    Psychiatric Emergencies Impact The Community
While the balance of these issues varies in different hospitals and localities, they are fairly consistent issues with a potential for strong negative impact on care for all patients, including less access and longer wait times. Both the hospital and community feel the consequences of inadequate planning and care.

Who is the FitShrink? Personal Transformation
“My turning point was when I was diagnosed with PCOS and asked my doctor for Metformin – he refused and told me to go home and lose weight. That experience was both painful and confusing, but I took it to heart. I developed systems to keep my hormonal challenge in remission with diet and exercise. While most people understand that chronic hormonal diagnosis as a fixed limitation, I refused to accept that long-term outcome and learned that I could grow out of it. Now I share health and fitness recovery programs to help others find their way when they hit that increasingly visible medical wall.
As a licensed professional counselor, I learned that most (not all) people would benefit more planned lifestyle change than from receiving a diagnostic label. I created FitShrink to create transformational strategies and put plans into action.”
    Kelly As Travelling Companion
“The goal when I work with clients is not to get them to look like fitness models. I work primarily with women ages 45-60 who internally know they want to be healthier but feel lost with the how. One woman I worked with lost over 100 pounds – when she started she was struggling with joint pain, couldn’t walk much, and had terrible asthma. Now she consistently walks 10,000 steps a day and has almost no asthma. Every day I work with people like her who think that they are “too old” or “too far gone’ to make significant changes. It’s never too late to become the healthiest version of yourself, one decision at a time.

    Emotional Freedom Technique – EFT
I am certainly not the typical role model – the college educated, good job, never-done-a-thing-wrong type a person. No, my life has been a bit more twisted and a lot more interesting! My journey has been one of extremes. I found out through healing my own pain that to change something you have to change yourself first.
    ~ Kai Ashley
Who is Kai Ashley? Notes From Street Recovery
Editor’s Note: Skeptics fasten your seat belts – because Kai Ashley will challenge your thoughts about self-improvement and self-discovery.  Quite honestly she at first sounds altogether over the edge with an EFT technique that’s as mysterious and disarming as EMDR but nevertheless works quite predictably for many biomedically-based treatment-refractory conditions. See the links below for references to Harvard research and articles that compare EMDR with EFT. Note the many references to PTSD, veterans health, addiction and even fibromyalgia. We should know about this tool, whatever our preoccupations with exactly how it works.
Kai’s Story Of Trauma – Client Turned Coach
Originally from Australia, Kia is an expert in energy healing practices that powerfully reprogram the subconscious. In her work, she uses EFT and has developed a method that rapidly releases trauma trapped in the body for a lifetime, while permanently changing a person’s thoughts and perspectives about themselves. It is very powerful and efficient work.
I had a lot to heal from. My early years were spent in a drug house with abusive, drug addicted parents. Fortunately, my grandparents took me away to live with them, but there was a lot of loneliness, resentment, unhappiness and low levels of abuse in the family. I was teased every day at school and developed chronic social anxiety – I was terrified of people. I had PTSD and was extremely reactive. I was always incredibly wild and would follow my own heart, which can be a strength but because I had no direction it got me into a lot of trouble.
It was at 22 years old that I had a full-on epiphany about the person I was – deceitful and incredibly mean – and I saw that my life would amount to nothing. Then began my journey into morality, increased self-awareness and personal responsibility. I became sober for almost 4 years and practiced Buddhism and meditation during those years. Rather than my life getting better, it descended into chronic fatigue without direction.
The doctors told me I would be sick forever and so I went home and healed myself within 6 months. I now know how to continue to move myself and others forward. But then was before I even knew what healing really was.
    What Is EFT?
EFT means “Emotional Freedom Techniques” and is a powerful self-help method based on research showing that emotional trauma contributes greatly to a variety of disease states . Clinical trials have shown that EFT tapping is able to rapidly reduce the emotional impact of memories and incidents that trigger emotional distress.
Once the distress is reduced or removed, the body can often rebalance itself, and accelerate healing.[1]
    EFT Research
EFT research includes investigators affiliated with many different institutions.
In the US, these range from Harvard Medical School, to the University of California at Berkeley, to City University of New York, to Walter Reed Military Medical Center, to Texas A&M University, to JFK University. Institutions in other countries whose faculty have contributed to EFT research include Staffordshire University (United Kingdom), Lund University (Sweden), Ankara University (Turkey), Santo Tomas University (Philippines), Lister Hospital (England), Cesar Vallejo University (Peru), Bond University (Australia) and Griffith University (Australia).

Neuromodulated Sound – Sound Modification And Brain Balance
After 45-years of clinical practice, I have focused in exclusively on the use of a binaural sound to alter memory restoration (reconsolidation) of traumatic memory. With well over 100 patients experiencing this procedure & remaining in remission, I have decided that my mission is to share this knowledge with those who continue to suffer from the effects of trauma..
    ~ George Lindenfeld
    Who is Dr. George Lindenfeld?
George Lindenfeld, Ph.D. is a pioneer in the field of healing trauma. A licensed psychologist and diplomate in clinical psychology, American Board of Professional Psychology, Dr. Lindenfeld has been practicing for 45 years, his work including specializing in the treatment of traumatic life experiences including PTSD. He served as Executive Director of two Mental Health Centers, a university faculty member, and is a published expert in his field. Currently, he is researching and utilizing technology with a potentially far-reaching impact on the healing of trauma and other neuroinflammatory conditions.
    What is Neuromodulated Sound?
Neuromodulation, defined by the International Neuromodulation Society as “the alteration of nerve activity through the delivery of electrical stimulation or chemical agents to targeted sites of the body,” is carried out to normalize – or modulate – nerve function. Neuromodulation is an evolving therapy that can involve a range of electromagnetic stimuli such as a strong magnetic field (repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation).[6] Listen to Dr. Tindler discuss deep transcranial magnetic stimulation – dTMS – here at CBJ/003.
    Details On How It Works
Remember as a child (or perhaps even now) when you would stare at a candle, or a campfire, and somehow feel yourself being calm and feeling relaxed and at peace? That is an example of a brainwave entrainment. In fact, this is one of the phenomenon that caused modern brainwave entrainment research; Gerard Oster in 1973 published a paper specifically talking about the “Flicker-response”, which is also what brainwave entrainment is often called.
The four main ways of stimulating the brain are aural stimuli (binaural beats, isochronic tones), visual (light machines, dreamachines), a combination of aural and visual, and electromagnetic radiation, but only the aural and visual ones are popular on the mainstream.[7]

Audio Visual Entrainment – Light, Sound, and Brain
Audio-Visual Entrainment (AVE) is a technique that utilizes pulses of light and sound at specific frequencies to gently and safely guide the brain into various brain wave patterns. By manipulating your brain wave frequencies, you have the ability to boost your mood, improve sleep patterns, sharpen your mind and increase your level of relaxation, all with the simple push of a button.
    ~ David Siever
    Why Consider AVE? Historical Perspective
Since the concept of photic driving was discovered by Adrian & Matthews in 1943, several thousand studies have been published on the topic of AVE. In the 1950s, there was a growing interest in the subjective effects of AVE. W. Gray Walters exposed several thousand subjects to photic stimulation at various frequencies and recorded their subjective experiences.
On another front, was Dr. William Kroger. Kroger was a physician with the US military and Kroger noticed that battleships and bomber planes were being driven into enemy territory because the radar operators were being entrained into a trance state from the old-fashioned “blip” style radars. This spurned Kroger to team up with Sidney Schneider of the Schneider Instrument Company where they developed the first commercial photic stimulator in 1955, which they used primarily for hypnotic induction and pain reduction during gastrointestinal surgery and dental work.
    How It Works
Audio Visual Entrainment is capable of producing situationally appropriate brain wave frequencies through the process of entrainment, the tendency of physiological processes to mirror environmental stimuli. AVE also increases cerebral blood flow (blood flow in the brain) and increases the metabolization of glucose in the brain for improved functioning of the neurons. The combined outcome of these processes is improved mental performance. AVE is an effective, inexpensive alternative therapy for many disorders such as anxiety, Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), PTSD, Fibromyalgia and chronic pain. AVE devices are also used successfully to boost physical performance for athletes, academic performance for students and cognitive performance for seniors.
    Indications
An important objective of entrainment is to produce a dissociative state, which is a meditation-like state of deep relaxation. It is the brain/body rehabilitative benefits produced by this deep trance-like state that makes AVE so useful for so many conditions. The dissociative state can be first observed by noticing deep and diaphragmatic breathing. Hands and feet become warmer as arteries dilate. Skin color will become pinker as blood flow increases throughout the face and body. Blood flow will increase in the brain as well. The person will experience feelings of profound relaxation and contentment as beneficial neurotransmitters are released into the brain. When in this deep state, the brain/body’s regenerative repair chemicals (parasympathetic hormones) and stabilizing neurotransmitters such as serotonin, endorphins and dopamine are released, which restore good brain function.
