Coriolanus - Episode 4 - There Is A World Elsewhere

Listen Later

As the citizens riot for Coriolanus’s punishment, Menenius begs the Senate to show mercy and persuades them to allow Coriolanus to return home while they work to calm the angry mob. Together, Menenius and the Senators lament Coriolanus’s faults, then defend him against the vengeance of the Tribunes, Brutus and Sicinius, who agree to let Coriolanus defend himself in a public trial against charges of treason. Back in the safety of his home, Volumnia berates her son for his impulsivity and begs him to apologize to the people, while Menenius and Cominius offer their support. Coriolanus reluctantly agrees to return to the marketplace to stand trial and make amends. Meanwhile, Sicinius and Brutus work secretly to stir up the passions of the crowd in order to provoke Coriolanus’s rage, so that the Senate will take immediate action against him. The plan works. Coriolanus cannot keep his cool against accusations of treason and flies into a rage. Neither Cominius nor Menenius can turn the tide. The Tribunes banish Coriolanus from Rome for life.
