After an horrific road accident in Iraq cut short his career as a trauma surgeon, Dr. Mike Ryan joined the World Health Organisation in 1996 and went to work in their newly opened unit, dealing in epidemics and infectious diseases.

Born in County Sligo, but raised in Charlestown County Mayo, he comes from farming and merchant stock. This Sunday evening he speaks to John Greene on Where the road takes me.

While we hear about life in war-torn countries fighting Ebola and SARS, the vast majority of the conversation turns to Covid 19.

He is strong in the belief that, despite several warnings, we had our heads in the sand as to the seriousness of this disease.
