If you don't know Bruce's story, please go back and listen to Episode #24. This is a follow up conversation with Bruce and his progress/journey over the last year after his accident. A truly inspiring story and amazing individual. Enjoy!
One week before his wife was due to have their first child Bruce stopped to help with a car accident on his way to work. While helping he was hit by a car and almost lost his life. Bruce was then rush to the hospital and in surgery all day with life-threatening injuries. Thankfully now he is recovering and doing well but he had to lose his left leg from the knee down. When faced with the choice of either losing his leg or keeping it and taking the chance it might cost him his life, the choice was clear. Losing his leg would mean being with his wife and seeing his baby girl grow up.
When you listen to Bruce's story and the people that where there tell what happened, you come to realize, that by all accounts, Bruce should not have survived.
There are many contributing factors for his survival. His wife, his unborn daughter, the quick thinking of some amazing individuals who happened to be there that day as well.
Bruce also had been strength training for a couple years at the time of the accident. At 5'2" and 120lbs prior to starting this program, Bruce worked extremely hard with the Starting Strength program https://startingstrength.com/ and Coach Nick Delgadillo, he put on 20lbs of muscle and was lifting twice his body weight on most of his barbell lifts.
This added muscle, strength, and ability fight through adversity no doubt helped him survive this ordeal.
Not only that, Bruce was back under the Barbell, minus his lower left leg, training less than 2 months after his accident.
Bruce's family and strength training helped save his life, and it's the driving force behind his incredible rate of recovery.

It was my dream to become a firefighter/paramedic and join the brotherhood of men and women that put their lives on the line to help others in need. I've lived and worked for 15 years as a professional firefighter and have learned a lot about what it takes to maintain physical and mental health while sustaining a healthy balance in my personal and professional life.
I currently live and serve in the suburbs outside Phoenix, Arizona. I am a husband and father of three. I'm an avid reader. I love to watch movies, play video games, and am very into fitness and nutrition.
Unfortunately, there is an increasing number of my brothers and sisters who are finding it more difficult to manage their stress. In 2017, firefighter and first-responder suicides surpassed line of duty deaths (LODDs) for the first time ever. This devastating news has revealed that we have a very real problem within the fire service community and it MUST not be ignored!
IGNITEd is a brotherhood of firefighters who challenge the status quo through self-improvement and accountability. Our working environments must be positively influenced and in order to improve them, we must first improve ourselves.
The IGNITEd Firefighter Podcast is a way to shed light on the issues facing us today as well as provide some strategies to help manage those challenges. We become stronger as we build each other, but we must first make sure that we are taking care of ourselves. Otherwise, we can't take care of those we are sworn to serve.
It's time to OWN IT when it comes to our physical and mental health as well as how we treat each other within our organizations!

Matt Reynolds has over 20 years of experience competing in strength sports and coaching barbell-based strength and conditioning. In his earlier life he totaled “elite” in multiple weight classes in powerlifting and earned his professional status in the sport of Strongman. In 2008, he founded one of the strongest and largest strength gyms in the country, STRONG Gym, which Matt sold in 2015, to turn his attention to the broader audience of online coaching.
Today his focus is on improving the quality-of-life of his clients and staff through the refining power of voluntary hardship (primarily through strength training). In 2016 Matt founded Barbell Logic; a company built to provide the highest quality online strength coaching and educational content in the industry, from the finest coaches on the planet, with unsurpassed customer service.
Barbell Logic has grown to be one of the largest online coaching companies on the planet, with a successful podcast, YouTube channel, and hundreds of articles on the value of strength training. However, none of this would have been possible without the hard work and support of his incredible staff (and the support of his family).
