Application Questions

1. Every human being is made in the image of God. How should that change the way you treat the people you work with, socialize with, and live with?
2. When we take God out of the equation, what reasons are there to treat all people with dignity? What do you think would happen in a society that wants dignity for all but doesn't ground it in the image of God? How do you see that at work in our society?
3. What would a church community that reflects the image of God look like in Los Angeles? How can you participate in that at Cornerstone?
4. Think of some people you find it difficult to treat with dignity and worth (it could be individuals, people who disagree with you, etc.). How does the gospel lead you to treat them with deep and genuine respect? How can you put that into practice?

1. Which areas can you identify discontentment in your own heart and life?
2. What does a life of passion-filled contentment look like? How can you have both (passion and contentment)?
3. How do circumstances reveal what is in your heart? What created things do you put your hope in, and how can you redirect that hope into Christ?
4. How does the future glory speak to your current circumstances?

1. How do you view and respond to conflict in the church? Do you know the process of gospel reconciliation?
2. How do you view and respond to worries and anxieties in your life?
3. What are ways that you can make prayer a more sustainable part of your life?
4.What do you dwell on during a normal day? How can you fill your mind with worthy truth rather than unworthy lies?

1. Who are the faithful Christians in your life that you can seek to emulate?
2. How would your life look different if you were more consistently emulating those people?
3. Who / what are the“enemies of the cross” that you find yourself imitating? Who shapes your life that you need to pay less attention to?
4. What are some of the key rights and responsibilities of being a citizen of heaven that you need to remember?
5. What are some practical things you can do to help be reminded of your citizenship?

1. Think of some of the reasons you are motivated to improve yourself. Which of them flow from the Gospel? Which of them flow from other desires?
2. Do you tend to view growth as following the rules better or getting to know Christ better? How has that view affected your growth?
3. Are you more focused on the direction you're headed in your growth (trajectory) or where you are right now (location)? Why?
4. How much effort do you put in to growing as a Christian? Why do you think that is?
5. What are some areas of growth that could use greater Spirit-empowered, grace-motivated hard work?

1. What are some ways that you "put your confidence in the flesh" (build your own identity outside of Christ)? What is on your "resume"?
2. What would it look like for you to "count these things as loss"for the sake of knowing Christ? How wouldyour life (attitude, relationships, decisions) change?
3. For you, is Christianity primarily about building a resume for yourself or receiving acceptance by grace?
4. How can you avoid the temptation to build a resume and focus on the surpassing worth of knowing Christ this week?

1. What are some of God's greatest blessings in your life?
2. Are you truly cherishing and enjoying those blessings? If not, what hinders your enjoyment?
3. In what ways are you planning / preparing to part with those blessings for the sake of the Gospel?
4. How would your life be different if you lived it "ready to share," planning to part with many of your blessings for the sake of the Gospel?
5. What might God be calling you to prepare to part with now? In the next 2, 5, or 10 years?

3. What do you complain about? Have you confessed and repented?
4. How does your security in Christ anchor you from the storms of life?

2. What strikes you most about Jesus' attitude in vv 6-11? Where in life are you trying to grasp your own significance instead of giving it away for others?
3. What would have to change for you to experience true humility? What is some of the encouragement, comfort, and love you've received in the gospel that can lead you there?
