This week, in Hosea 6-8 the accusations continue as the Lord addresses the second of these - their lack of love or mercy. This is seen in their superficial and syncretistic worship, their hot temper, and their alliance with other nations instead of seeking the Lord's protection.--However, amidst the accusations and warnings of impending judgment, we continue to see the Lord's unfailing love for his people. Like a despairing parent, the Lord cries out, -What shall I do with you, O Ephraim-- Except, with the Lord, there is the always hope, never despair. There is always the promise of God, and he is forever faithful to his covenant people. Even the chastisement Israel receive from the Lord is his faithfulness in action, with the view to restoration and healing.--In what might seem to be impossible and hopeless situations in our own hearts and our own days, do not despair - with the Lord there is always hope. He who promised is faithful, and he gives and he gives, more and more grace.

Overview: The love of God is inexplicable- the prophet Hosea speaks of a day in which Israelas covenant relationship -marriage- with God, which has been trashed by her persistent idolatry, will be totally restored and renewed. God loves an Israel who has shamelessly shared her bed with other lovers. This love comes to a nation who has tasted the bitterness of Godas judgement. His love is not based on any worthiness on her part. God goes out to renew the marriage not on the basis of Israelas efforts to rebuild what has been destroyed but purely and simply on His own utter faithfulness as Israelas true husband. Any response from Israel is because God first loves her.----This promised restoration and blessing can only find its ultimate fulfilment in Christ in the power of a new covenant in which God Himself goes further than trying to patch up a failed marriage. Overview: How does the Lord respond to unfaithfulness---As we begin a new series through the book of Hosea this week, the first three chapters depict the Lord's response to Israel's betrayal and unfaithfulness through the marriage of Hosea to his wife Gomer, and their children. The Lord cannot simply overlook covenant unfaithfulness. On the contrary, as the names of Hosea's children in the first chapter convey, Israel deserves 'no mercy' and she has relinquished her right to be called 'the people of God'. However, the Lord remains faithful to his 'bride', and through merciful judgment, bears the betrayal and shame of his unfaithful wife and will restore her to himself with unfailing, redeeming love.--The Lord is deeply pained by the lack of faithfulness, love and knowledge among his covenant people. The warnings and judgment we read of in Hosea are drastic measures indeed. Yet, in holy, jealous love, the Lord is determined to call us to repentance and to restore us to himself in covenant love so that we might receive mercy and be called 'children of the living God'.

However, in the gospel, by the blood of Christ, our consciences have been cleansed and purified. Our sin and guilt have been atoned. And so, we can once more enjoy communion with God and with one another, without fear. What delight and freedom there is, in knowing our consciences have been cleansed from all our guilt and dead works so that we might serve the living God.
