Overview: The ministry of John the Baptist is the sign that the new thing that the prophets had longed for had arrived- this one who simply described himself as -the voice of one calling in the desert- would not allow himself to be put in any messianic or prophetic category that might confuse his mission in the eyes of the community of Israel. The greatness of the One he was heralding needed a witness who would not get in the way of the revelation of the Son of God to Israel. ----His ministry of baptizing with water could not be compared with the ministry of the One who would baptize with the Spirit. We need to hear afresh the confession of John the Baptist as he bears witness to the great Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world- We need to know this Son of God upon whom the Spirit descends and permanently remains as the one true bearer and giver of the Spirit by which we too are empowered to bear witness to the truth.

This light 'shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.'--At times, the world can seem a dark place. Sometimes we feel surrounded and perhaps even suffocated by it. Closer to home, we are often aware of the dark recesses of our own hearts. It is into such darkness the true light of God shines, giving light and life to all who believe. Sadly, many prefer to stumble and hide in the darkness rather than walk in the light. To these, Jesus says, -I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.- Follow him and believe in him, and you will know, with great relief and joy, that the darkness has not overcome the light.

Overview: In what many are calling a -post-truth- culture, everyone is encouraged to live in the light of their own -word- rather than accept the absolute truth of any other word. It is into this moral and spiritual darkness that the true Word shines- not simply as a set of Christian beliefs or even a moral code but the revelation of One who is the very author and source of life.--Only One who was -face to face- with God in the beginning, sharing the very life of God as the One through whom God made the universe, can show us the truth of life and the truth of God. Here we have not merely another -word- to compete with all the other -words- but the very Word of life Himself.--In a few simple, yet profound, phrases John draws back the curtain of this present world to the time before creation to unapologetically declare the greatness of Jesus Christ. No other explanation can make adequate sense of the Person we meet in the pages of John-s gospel. Overview: This week we conclude our series through the book of Hosea. Chapter 14 includes the final call to Israel to repent of their idolatry and return to the Lord. However, the very thing the Lord requires of them, they are unable to do of themselves. Rebellion and sin are not merely acts of the will which need correcting, they are matters we need to be healed of. And the Lord, in his kindness and unfailing love, promises to do just that - I will heal their apostasy- I will love them freely.--As we have heard throughout this series, the Lord is faithful to his covenant promises - both in judgment and in mercy. In fact, it is through these judgments that the Lord's people are brought to life and made to flourish. We know today that this anticipates the wrath of God poured out upon his Son on the cross. It is there at Calvary that death was entered into and overcome so that life can flourish for all who believe and 'return to the Lord'. It is there that the Lord has healed all his beloved of their iniquity and sin, enabling us to return to him and love him with our whole heart, soul and might. Whoever is wise, let him understand these things- whoever is discerning, let him know them- for the ways of the Lord are right, and the upright walk in them, but transgressors stumble in them. Thanks be to God.

Overview: These chapters not only take us to the heart of God's controversy with His people but to the depth and pathos of the very heart of God. They speak not only of the depth to which Israel had fallen and the terrible destruction and exile that was their destiny, but also of God's original delight and joy in His people. When we see the depth of God's feeling towards His people, it makes their apostasy to pagan fertility cults all the more unfathomable.--We may struggle at the horror of what Israel had to suffer for her sins but we should not doubt the depth of God's love for His people, nor His overflowing compassion in restoring the nation back in the land. It is this holy love that finds, no, plans from before creation, the way to win the heart of a sick and incurable humanity, not by softening His wrath on our deceit and idolatry but by pouring it out on the Son of His love so that we might know the depth to which the Father would go to restore us to Himself.
