In 2019, I moved from Tauranga to Coromandel Town with my wife and youngest daughter for a bit of a ‘gap year’ – a new adventure, if you will. Once here, Coromandel had its way with us, and we decided to permanently call this place home. From early childhood, it was clear I was wired for art, and in my teenage years, I immersed myself in painting. In the mid-80s, whilst in high school, Michael Smither was my artist hero; at home, I painted birds and wanted to be the next Raymond Ching.

The protection offered by marine reserves allows marine ecosystems to flourish. We all play a part in protecting these special areas.

Te Whanganui-o-Hei / Cathedral Cove marine reserve is part of the rohe (area) first claimed by Hei, leader of Ngati Hei, who arrived in 1350 AD on Arawa waka. The area was named Te Whanganui-o-Hei (the great bay of Hei).

Most people picture a harp something like this: Gently falling arpeggios, graceful fingers, and nondescript angelic lullabies ... the kind of harp we see in the background of movies to signify affluence and luxury and relaxation. From the time I could walk, I wanted to play a harp like this. Oh, to be so serene, so refined. My ten-year-old self, clinging to princess daydreams, so desperately wanted to understand that mesmerising, other-worldly instrument.

Whitianga is abuzz as Mercury Bay Performing Arts (MBPA) gears up for its first production, Disney’s Aladdin Junior: The Musical. Led by Fabian Roberts, a passionate musician, songwriter and radio DJ, MBPA aims to inspire tamariki (children) and rangatahi (youth) with the magic of musical theatre while fostering confidence and lifelong skills.

Coffee consumption as a beverage began approximately 700 years ago in places like Ethiopia (East Africa) and Yemen (Middle East). Today, coffee consumption is still expanding and a staple in most societies. Coffee is grown in over 70 countries and is the second most exported commodity in the world (after oil).

I was born in London to Kiwi parents who were there on their honeymoon. You may think it must have been a long honeymoon but that’s a story for another time. I was taken by ship and flying boat to Aotearoa and didn’t return to the country of my birth until I was 21. I was carrying a surfboard when I arrived at London’s Heathrow Airport.
