Sitting in my home – nearly hidden in kānuka (white tea-tree) forest – above the stretch of sand and sea that is my tūrangawaewae (place to stand), Te Puia Pā (an ancient fortified village) is shrouded in mist. My mind takes me on a journey …

Every morning offers us a beautiful opportunity: the chance to start anew in our relationships. But this renewal is only possible if we actively prevent the buildup of what I call ‘relationship gunge’ – those unspoken thoughts, unexpressed feelings, and silent resentments that gradually corrode the connections we cherish most. We live in a country of natural beauty and we pride ourselves on our clean green environment image. However, we are destroying the ocean floor around us. After her youngest child left for tertiary studies this year, it was time for Reina to focus on herself and prioritize her well-being. Over the past year, she dedicated time to self-care, undergoing some non-serious surgeries and procedures, including eye surgery, and has humorously emerged as “Reina 2.0.” Despite these procedures, she continued to paint and host art workshops and retreats, successfully completing four very large commissions throughout the year.
