Two big themes mark Episode 55.  We start by looking at secrecy in the UK, tragedy in Brazil, and growing Russian dependency on China to see the world beyond the human suffering of the coronavirus to see old orders disappearing to an uncertain yet undeniably novel future.  With oil collapsing, we see debt rising, and the big actors being protected for now as billionaires gain and banks rise, but small businesses suffer, people are unemployed, and food scarcity looms ominously on the horizon for wealthy and poorer populations alike.  A credit contraction is already beginning at the bottom as consumption remains low, and with local governments going in arrears to fill the gap, the question about the future should not be how to get back, but how we can survive the many unknowns we must all confront in the days ahead?

Episode 54 takes a hard look at what we should expect from a second wave.  Instead of basing our modeling on the idea those who have had Covid are automatically assumed to have immunity, against the growing body of evidence of weak antibodies, we look instead at the nature of what Covid does, what other coronaviruses do, and look at the physical reasons why a second wave could be far more dangerous.  We see clotting becoming a major problem, eyes infected, and connect these to a coronavirus which can last longer, infect more ways, and has shown the ability to recur with greater virulence from mutation and greater risk to people from an increased volume of viral load.  We imagine a number of cured people going out to claim victory, but what if our future is far more sick people going out to unwittingly infect one another without the immunity they assume, dangerously, to possess,

Unhappily, Episode 53 covers the consequences of disjointed Federal policy in the United States leading to new divisions.  A failure by DC to prepare for or meet the needs of states led to encouraging independent responses, and we see at least three factions forming as pacts that are pursuing a divergent path than the Administration desires with growing acrimony and consequences.  With California, New York, and Illinois all firmly ensconced with their neighbors in a health driven slower approach, we see people bristle on both sides as the issues become more partisan, and we see the Great Plains, South, and Texas rush toward openings.  If things go badly, how fragile might these connections become?

Season Two begins another ten week journey into Covid and its to be seen impacts with Episode 51.  Today's episode is all about the coronavirus, and what we are seeing from patients.  We see a disease that while still plenty fatal is causing heart failure, kidney failure, hypoxia, and immune weakness for weeks after recovery and with growing questions about what immunity, if any, conveys for those who have had this.  A study from the Atlantic leaves us wondering if more people have had Covid, would this be better or worse as we hear survivor tales that all is not right afterward.  Perhaps, we should listen most closely to Luc Montagnier, part of the team that discovered HIV when he says he believes someone was playing with SARS and HIV to leave us this most unpleasant malady.

In our 48th episode, we explore challenging evidence suggesting that antibody protection is brief and scant, that the red blood cells are another target, and a provocative fear that asymptomatic carriers may experience reactivation through means not understood within a month of a first infection.  After looking at the troubles in the Bronx, and an elevated death toll from the UK from home deaths, we consider why ivermectin might be helping as another antimalarial.  We add evidence the hypoxia leading to deaths is because Covid interferes with both the iron and scaffolding of red blood cells, and learn that carriers with slight infection were without antibodies in under a month in a substantial number of cases.  This changes many assumptions in the modeling, suggesting reinfection could occur rapidly, but also with increasing severity as recurrent asymptomatic carriers could hit each other with increased density of viral load in infected areas with already present Covid to guide potential immune suppression.  These problems might be why we see UK papers now questioning if this came from a lab as China hoards masks at the same time people get sick in Toronto from bad ones they shipped out.  Feds are taking from states and hospitals without explanation in the US.  In the good news department, Vitamin C helps a lot even for those in the hospital, and North Dakota gives us an example of how science can permit different publicly useful and acceptable responses as we move forward.
