We meet Raoden the prince of Arelon who has woken one morning to find himself damned and announced as dead, Sarene a princess who was betrothed to Raoden but now arrives in Arelon to find herself a widow before she ever met her husband, and Hrathen a gyorn of Shu-Dareth who has been given three months by his Emperor to convert Arelon otherwise it will be destroyed.
